Chapter V Life, Health

Article 22 The prison room shall be ventilated, lighted, and able to be protected against moisture, heat and cold. Detention centers shall conduct frequent inspections and timely repairs of prison cells to prevent fires and other natural disasters.

The living area of a detained person shall be such that it does not interfere with his or her daily life.

Article 23 Meals for prisoners in custody shall be provided in accordance with the prescribed standards, and deduction or misappropriation is prohibited.

In the case of prisoners of ethnic minorities and foreign nationalities, their national customs and habits shall be taken into account and they shall be accommodated in their daily lives.

Article 24 Prisoners shall provide their own clothes and bedding. If they are unable to do so, they shall be provided by the detention center.

Article 25 A prisoner shall have the necessary sleep time and one to two hours of outdoor activities every day.

Detention centers shall establish a system of epidemic prevention and hygiene for prisoners.

Article 26 A detention center shall be equipped with necessary medical equipment and common medicines. When a prisoner is sick, he shall be given timely treatment; if he needs to go to a hospital for treatment, the local hospital shall be responsible for the treatment; if his condition is serious, he may be released on bail pending trial in accordance with the law.

Article 27 If a prisoner dies in custody, the death shall be immediately reported to the people's procuratorate and the organ handling the case, and the forensic doctor or physician shall make an appraisal of the cause of death and notify the family of the deceased.
