The disposable tableware used in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo will no longer be made of traditional plastics, but will be made of biomass materials called "corn plastics", which will not cause any pollution to the environment. Professor Ren Jie, deputy dean of the School of Engineering, revealed that not only disposable cups, trays and boxes, but also road signs, badges and magnetic cards used in the World Expo will likely come from corn.
Ren Jie explained that this new biomass material is called "polylactic acid", corn and other crops through biofermentation technology to prepare a "green oil". This material can be recycled, taking a cycle chain from crops to lactic acid, to polylactic acid, to polylactic acid products, and then to the natural degradation of the environment, no burden. It can be widely used in agricultural film, fiber textiles, disposable products, packaging materials, engineering plastics, and even modern medical materials and other fields, "such as medical bone nails, now often use steel nails, need to be removed or replaced, if the use of biodegradable polylactic acid, bone nails can be automatically degraded after a certain period of time, to avoid the secondary pain of the patient".
In 2005, Japan's Aichi Expo has begun to apply PLA this biomass material, made of disposable tableware, trays, and even laptop shells. Ren Jie told reporters that the Aichi Expo is used in the United States production of corn plastic, which uses a two-step method of preparation means, the process line is cumbersome, low yield, high cost, is not suitable for large-scale yield production." And in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, we will use a one-step PLA preparation process, cost-effective, both safe and guaranteed yield."
Ren Jie said, with "corn plastic" to do packaging materials has been included in the Expo special program, used up waste cups or boxes will then be landfilled for natural degradation, as the material can be absorbed for recycling. According to reports, in 2005, the global plastic production of 200 million tons, China's output of about 18 million tons. Traditional plastics are not only made of process energy consumption, and manufactured products in addition to part of the recycling, the rest are processed through incineration, landfills and other methods, which will result in waste of land and the release of toxic substances and other serious pollution.
Ren Jie also revealed that, although the edible corn made of high-volume biomass packaging materials has been more than enough, but experts are also studying the use of other biomass materials, including sugar cane, yams and sweet sorghum, made of plastic products, especially energy materials.
