I think that the most expensive instruments are the ones that are the most expensive. I think the most expensive ones are the most advanced instruments. For example, the Personalized Genome Sequencer

Discovering the Ion Torrent

Ion Torrent, the Personalized Genome Sequencer (PGM?), is a simpler, more affordable, and more scalable sequencing platform on the market than any other sequencing technology. The design of the PGM?benchtop system, coupled with revolutionary semiconductor chip technology, makes the entire platform highly scalable and capable of delivering rapid sequencing performance.

Ion Torrent technology enables direct and real-time detection of ionic streams generated during DNA amplification through proprietary massively parallel semiconductor sensors. When reagents enter the Ion Torrent semiconductor chip through the integrated fluidic pathway, the densely packed reaction pores on the chip immediately become millions of microreaction systems. This unique combination of fluidic system, microsystem mechanical design and semiconductor technology allows us to rapidly and directly translate genetic information into digital DNA sequencing results, yielding large amounts of high quality sequencing data.

Personally operated genome sequencers, coupled with Ion Torrent's semiconductor chips, reaction kits and computer servers, and data analysis suites, provide you with cutting-edge sequencing solutions.

Sequencing and analytical process

The standard elements of the Ion Torrent sequencing process include, from preparation of a random fragment DNA library or amplicon library, to PCR amplification of the sample and the sequencing run at the PGM.

After the entire PGM sequencing run is completed, the data is automatically imported into a dedicated Torrent Preloaded Analysis Suite computer server. Here, the raw sequencing signal is converted to base sequences and stored in industry standard SFF or FASTAQ formats. The sequencing data can then be analyzed by a wide range of commercially available software for different applications or for splicing of completely new genomes.
