Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Hospital (SPHI) started its preparations in the 1990s and the project was officially launched in 2003. With the full support of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, and the active cooperation of all relevant state departments, the hospital has been honed for ten years, and has finally become China's first medical institution with both proton and heavy ion technologies. From June to September 2014, Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Hospital successfully conducted clinical trials on 35 patients. In December of the same year, all 35 cases with 3 months of treatment were completed with clinical trial observation and follow-up, successfully ending the clinical trial. In March 2015, the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) issued the first domestic registration certificate for the import of proton heavy ion system equipment to Shanghai Proton Heavy Ion Hospital. By the beginning of April 2015, the clinical trial cases had finished treatment for 6 months, and the follow-up summary of the hospital's expert team showed that the proton heavy ion system equipment had achieved satisfactory results, both in terms of safety and in terms of immediate efficacy.
