Guanqiao got its name from a long time ago. According to legend, when Yang Wenguang, a famous general in the Song Dynasty, leveled the Bat Cave in Tiefeng Mountain, one of the eighteen caves in southern Fujian, he set up camp in Jiangzaitou. Because of the need to pass through the triangular pit creek, for the convenience of marching, in the triangular pit creek to build a simple stone bridge. Because of this bridge built by the government, this place is named "Government Bridge", which is still in use today.

Since Anxi County was established, Guanqiao Township has had many changes in affiliation. In the Song Dynasty, Guanqiao Town belonged to Yiren Li of Guishan Township, Xinxi Li of Jide Township, Chongshan Li of Xiu Ren Township and Longxing Li of Jintian Township. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Anxi was divided into 18 li, and Guanqiao Town belonged to Xinxi Li, Yiren Li and Xingyi Li. During the Republic of China (R.O.C.) period, the Qing system was followed at the beginning; in the 21st year of R.O.C. (1932), Xinxi and Yiren Lane belonged to Yixin District; in the 25th year of R.O.C. (1936), it was changed to the first district; in the 29th year of R.O.C. After the founding of New China, Guanxi Township belonged to Longcheng District at the beginning, and was soon changed to the second district. in July 1952, it was changed to the fifth district, with the jurisdiction of Guanqiao Township and 12 townships such as Lianmei etc. In September 1955, the fifth district was renamed as Guanqiao District, with the jurisdiction of 14 townships. in February 1958, Guanqiao District was abolished, and was assigned to Guanqiao Township and Chuntan Township. in September 15th, 1958, Guanqiao Township and Chuntan Township and Longmen Township were merged, and Guanqiao Peoples Commune was established, and Longmen Township was merged. On September 15, 1958, Guanqiao Township, Chuntan Township and Longmen Township merged to form Guanqiao People's Commune, which was the first people's commune in the county. 1961 August, Guanqiao was divided into 7 small communes, namely, Guanqiao, Bishan, Wudu, Shantan, Shiyan, Chiling and Shangyuan, which were subordinate to Guanqiao District. 1965 April, when the district was withdrawn, 7 small communes were abolished and merged into Guanqiao Commune. 1984 August was changed into Guanqiao Township and is used to the present day. 2005 the end of the year, Guanqiao Township was under the jurisdiction of Guanqiao Street Guanqiao Township has 29 villages: Guanqiao, Guanyu, Renzhu, Lianduomei, Lianmei, Renfeng, Biyi, Biyi, Xiantu, Lingtou, Wuzong, Liaoyuan, Caozaka, Hengmei, Hongtang, Shantan, Neicun, Xincun, Shiyan, Shilin, Yiling, Chiling, Qingshi, Shangyuan, Shanchen, Mashishi, Shanyi, Xindang, and Yilin, as well as the Tea and Fruit Farm, the Yilin Forest Farm, and the Lanfeng Style Forest Farm, of which Shantan is a She village.
