National Cancer Center inaugurated

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) signed a cooperation agreement with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in April 2007, and researchers and clinicians from the NIH Cancer Institute (NCI) have been involved in the medical care of the medical team of National Cheng Kung University Hospital (NCKUH) for nearly five years, which has led to the development of research in cancer treatment and is now moving towards the establishment of a National Cancer Center.

Dr. Lam, President of National Cheng Kung University Hospital, said, "Today marks the inauguration of the National Cancer Center of the National Cheng Kung University Hospital and National Institutes of Health (NCKUH), and the combination of the oncology team of NCKUH and the cancer research team of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is an important milestone for cancer research in the country. The solid cancer teams of the NTUH Oncology Center, with their commitment to basic cancer research and medical services, will be the cornerstone of the collaboration in cancer research between the two institutions. Currently, the hospital is committed to clinical research, cancer diagnosis and treatment, cancer, cardiovascular, hepatitis and other clinical trials, in addition to large-scale investment in research equipment and manpower, and the National Institutes of Health Cancer Institute clinical cooperation has become more mature, in the hope that the integration of clinical research and clinical services as one, to become the southern clinical trials and research town. Through the cooperation between the two parties, we will work together to develop clinical trials and research to accelerate the application of clinical treatment in the future, which will create a more high-quality and diversified cancer center for the people in the south, providing a full range of medical services in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Director of the NIH Cancer Institute, Mr. J.Y. Chang, also said, "The NIH Cancer Institute and the most important medical center in the southern region, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, have joined hands to establish the National Cancer Center, which will be more oriented towards forming a strong cancer research team, and will be committed to promoting clinical trials and basic research on cancer, so that we can raise the level of clinical research on cancer in Taiwan, and to provide services for cancer patients in the south of the country. It is also hoped that the integration of the two specialists in the clinical and research areas of development, towards through the two sides after the cooperation, to increase clinical research, to provide cancer patients with more medical resources.

Cancer has always been the leading cause of death in China, and cancers such as liver, lung, bladder, skin, oral head and neck cancers are all important cancers in the southern region. The number of outpatient, emergency and inpatient cancer cases in National Cheng Kung University Hospital reaches one million each year. The establishment of the National Cancer Center, an interdisciplinary medical team between National Cheng Kung University Hospital and the National Health Service, can serve as the basis for long-term cooperation, with the hope of providing a patient-centered and integrated model of cancer treatment, coupled with exchanges with the School of Medicine, which will lead to long-term and continuous cooperative research and provide patients with more clinical trials, so that the southern region, which is poorer in terms of cancer medical resources than the northern part of the country, will be more resource-rich and have better quality of medical care after the cooperation between the two sides. Cancer research and cancer treatment are complementary to each other; opening a new milestone for both sides to protect cancer patients.
