The main subjects of CSIP were first traced back to the Mining Department of Hunan Higher Industrial College founded in 1903.
In 1952, in the adjustment of the faculties and departments of the national colleges and universities, the mining and metallurgy disciplines of six institutions, including Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Guangxi University, Hunan University and Nanchang University, were organized to form the Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and four departments of geology, mining, ore dressing and non-ferrous metal metallurgy were set up.
In 1959, in the context of the development of nuclear weapons and the nuclear industry, the state moved the Department of Mining and Metallurgy Engineering and other specialized departments of the former Zhongnan Institute of Mining and Metallurgy to Hengyang, and formed the Hengyang Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Engineering (SCMME), which was subordinate to the Ministry of the Second Machine Tool.
