Examples of Doctors Saving Lives

"Saving lives is a doctor's vocation"

One night in early spring and February, an ambulance sped along the roads of The Gambia, Africa. The snowy headlights cut through the darkness of the night. The ambulance stops in front of a hospital and a 7-year-old black child is carried down. He had fallen to the ground that afternoon from a tree more than 10 meters high and was bleeding from a wound on his upper left arm.

The hospital's operating room was brightly lit, and Guan Weimao, an attending orthopedic surgeon with China's medical team in The Gambia, had just finished an operation when the injured black child was pushed in again. Dr. Guan found that the black child's lower left upper arm had broken bones, most of the muscles were severed, and the nerves were severely contused. In the local area, the previous treatment for a case like this was amputation. The medical conditions here are extremely poor and lack proper medical equipment. It has been more than 8 hours since the black child fell and the child is in a coma, it is very difficult to save this arm. "Amputation" or "preservation"? Dr. Guan pondered: amputation is easy, but from now on the child became disabled. Our responsibility is to save lives and help the injured, no matter how difficult it is, we must save the child's arm. So, he decisively decided: "Resuscitate immediately!"

Time is life. Dr. Guan stood in front of the operating table and worked nervously. He cleaned the wound as fast as possible, rectified and fixed the bone immediately the severed blood vessels to find, skillfully sewing blood vessels ...... time passed hour by hour. When the blood vessels are connected, release the two ends of the blood vessel clamp, a pair of eyes staring at the child's injured left arm. "The blood flow is smooth," cheers came out of people's mouths at the same time. The black child's arm was saved.

It was early morning the next day when the operation was completed, and Dr. Guan couldn't take a break to think about the next step in the treatment plan.

The Gambian medical staff marveled at the Chinese doctors' spirit of risk-taking and meticulous work style. The parents of the sick child held Dr. Guan's hand tightly, tears could not help but flow out.
