The development status of sewage treatment in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s sewage treatment development is relatively mature, and both the government and residents attach great importance to sewage treatment and environmental protection. The current status of sewage treatment development in Hong Kong is as follows:

1. Construction of sewage treatment plants: Hong Kong currently has 11 sewage treatment plants, 9 of which are located in the New Territories and 2 on Hong Kong Island. The construction and operation of these sewage treatment plants is the responsibility of the Environmental Protection Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government.

2. Sewage treatment technology: Hong Kong’s sewage treatment technology mainly uses biological treatment technology, including activated sludge method, biofilm method, biological contact oxidation method, etc. In addition, technologies such as chemical precipitation, filtration, and disinfection are also used.

3. Sewage treatment effect: Hong Kong’s sewage treatment effect is good, and the treated water quality meets national and international standards. Among them, the New Territories East Sewage Treatment Plant is the largest sewage treatment plant in Hong Kong, with a treatment capacity of approximately 1.8 million cubic meters per day.

4. Sewage treatment costs: Hong Kong’s sewage treatment costs are borne jointly by the government and residents. The government supports the construction and operation of sewage treatment plants through taxes and sewage treatment fees, while residents need to pay monthly sewage treatment fees.
