In the Ten Recitation Laws, it is said that there are five things that can make people crazy: First, the death of loved ones, so crazy; Second, the loss of property, so crazy; Third, the loss of field industry, people, so crazy; Fourth, the four big (earth, water, fire, wind, referring to the cause of the body) is wrong, so crazy; Fifth, the karmic retribution of the previous life, so crazy.
There is also a passage in the Yogacara explaining mental illness, "What is madness? It is said to be madness caused by prior karma, or by the misalignment of the realms, or by the loss of will through terror, or by striking and touching the end of a moksha, or by the attraction of ghosts and demons."
What is madness? It is when the mind is disordered, loses self-control, loses consciousness and becomes entangled in painful troubles. One lives without order, without right thoughts, with deranged nerves, what causes this?
The first cause is "caused by the previous karma," which means that the disease is caused by the sinful karma created in the past life. What sins result in mental illness? One of them is karma caused by alcohol. If you persuade people to drink alcohol or sell alcohol for a living, you will be prone to develop neurosis in the future. The Bodhisattva Precepts of the Brahma Net Sutra also say that selling alcohol for a living has serious consequences, so both Bodhisattvas and mortals should not engage in this kind of occupation. Let's look at those drunkards, how different they are from the mentally ill in their staring, babbling, crying, laughing, and falling over? Therefore, we should not become victims of today's "drinking culture", let alone turning others into victims. The second is poisoning or intentional intimidation. Some people like to joke around and hide when they see their friends coming, waiting to scare them. Actually, this is not good. Similarly, others are meditating, someone suddenly yells, this is easy to get nervous. So do not disturb the spiritual "order" of others, or their own "order" will be easily confused. Third, setting fire to the mountains is prone to mental illness. This is because such an evil act causes the animals in the mountains and forests to suffer mental harm, and it also disturbs their mental order. Then this person will be prone to mental illness in the future, as is said to be led by prior karma.
The second cause of the Sutra is "by the disorder of the various realms". The "realms" are earth, water, fire, and wind. The World Honored One said in the Ten Recitation Laws that there are five things that can cause madness: first, the death of loved ones; second, the loss of possessions; third, the loss of property and people; and fourth, the four great disturbances. The "four great elements" are earth, water, fire and wind. They combine to form our body, which includes all kinds of physiological tissues. If the earth, water, fire and wind parts are disordered and imbalanced, the various internal tissues of the body dominated by them will clash with each other, and once all the boundaries are disordered, causing the human brain to be unable to bear, it will suffer from neurosis. This point, Chinese medicine and Buddhism have made a common explanation. Chinese medicine believes that the five viscera and six bowels correspond to different characteristics of the five elements, the five elements exist in the theory of mutual reinforcement. Brain for the House of God, our greed, resentment, jealousy, arrogance, suspicion and other kinds of trouble as if the wind and fire, wind, fire to take advantage of the situation to grow their own power, will hurt other organs, and ultimately the body tossed no peace, if the injury to the brain, will confuse our emotions. Depression or mental illness, will come into being. Some people are born with all the realms of the world wrongly four big incompatibility.
The third cause is "loss of will by terror". That is to say, because of some horrible thing, one loses one's right mind, and only then does one get a theophany. If someone sees a demon or god in a horrific form, he or she will be frightened and become disoriented. In fact, more people "see" images of ghosts and gods from their own imagination, which is called "having ghosts in one's heart" and scaring oneself for nothing. I have heard of people being scared to death by their own shadows, and I have also heard of people telling ghost stories and scaring each other to the point of insanity, as well as watching horror movies to the point that they are afraid to go to the toilet or to be alone. In fact, there is no need to be afraid, the Buddhist scriptures say, "Ghosts are seven times more afraid of people, people are three times more afraid of ghosts, and those who keep the precepts are blessed by the guardian deities, and there is even less need to frighten themselves."
The fourth cause is "or by hitting and touching the end of the Mo": "Mo" is the limbs and joints of our body, which is translated as "dead points" and "dead joints" in the Yoga Teacher's Treatise "The Recluse's Record". If you hit or touch this node, the person will suffer particularly severe pain, and even trigger nervous disorders.
The fifth cause is "or by the ghosts and demons". Some people do something seriously wrong and offend the ghosts and gods, and the ghosts and gods come to retaliate, which is called "by the ghosts and demons". Or you and the spirits are now haunted by the hatred and love that you have had with them since many lifetimes ago. In reality, many of these by the ghosts of the psychiatric patients to the hospital, no matter how advanced medical equipment doctors use can not find the real cause of the disease, watching the patients suffering from the disease can not do anything, some medical workers do not know the cause, and even use some abnormal means to treat the patients cruelly, it is really heartbreaking!
Unbeknownst to me, the only way to untie the knot between the patient and the ghost, is through the patient's friends and relatives in the patient's name, sincere repentance, chanting, releasing, read the Guanyin Bodhisattva's holy name of the Buddha's work to collect merit, this merit back to the patient's relatives and debtors, to elevate them out of the evil world, the casting of the good, in order to really let the two solve the grudge. Therefore, people should live in harmony with each other, respect each other, learn from the great wisdom and compassion of the Buddha, and use wisdom to deal with problems.
How to solve the problem
If you are really disturbed by the ghosts and spirits when you sleep at night, you can recite many of the mantras in the Azhapatthana Ghosts and Spirits Dharani Sutra, or you can simply recite: Namo Azhapatthana Ghosts and Spirits Dharani Sutra or Dark Heavenly King's name. They are in charge of the gods of the earth (i.e., ghosts and spirits) and if the ghosts and spirits harass you, if you recite their names sincerely, they will use their vajra staffs to beat the evil ghosts and spirits that harass you!
