Young people are energetic and have the most creative enthusiasm and innovation potential. Strengthening scientific research from the time undergraduates enter the university can not only help students establish a good learning style and enhance their basic research ability, but also be an important way to realize high-quality talent training.
In Nantong University School of Medicine (School of Nursing), Wu Huiqun, a doctoral supervisor and instructor of the national "Challenge Cup" Grand Prize and China's "Internet Plus" Silver Prize, leads undergraduates to wander in the sea of medical research, enjoying a collision of ideas, and exploring their own science and technology step by step. The students were able to explore their own new world of science and technology step by step.
Big data has brought about a paradigm shift in medical research, and artificial intelligence has led the way for technological and industrial revolutions. As early as 2011, Wu Huiqun began to try to introduce artificial intelligence technology into his research on diabetic retinopathy. For more than a decade, Wu Huiqun has been committed to teaching and researching medical informatics, an emerging interdisciplinary field, in the hope of integrating the latest information technology into traditional medical devices and medical solutions, greatly reducing the time required to promote technology, and realizing the goal of "letting patients walk less".
As one of the leaders of the Intelligent Medical Engineering program of the hospital, Wu Huiqun is actively involved in the exploration of the educational practice of "new medical science". In recent years, he presided over and participated in the national scientific and technological key research and development projects, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, four, Jiangsu Province, "blue project" excellent backbone teachers, Nantong City, the fifth phase of the "226 project", to participate in the Jiangsu Province, excellent young teachers and principals of colleges and universities abroad training program. He also participated in the Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Teachers and Principals Overseas Training Program of Jiangsu Universities.
In the past three years, Wu Huiqun has published more than 20 SCI/EI papers as the first author or corresponding author, and has been awarded the honorary title of "Nantong Young Position Master", "Outstanding Instructor of Discipline Competition", and "Advanced Individual of Nantong University Education Work", etc. Wu Huiqun is not only a member of the Chinese Medical Association, but also a member of the Chinese Medical Association. Wu Huiqun is not only one of the four national young vice-chairmen of the Medical Informatics Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, but also one of the first directors of the China Medical Informatics Discipline Development Alliance.
Relying on the evolution of artificial intelligence, the development of the Internet and the application of big data, information technology continues to give rise to "medical black technology". In line with the trend of the times, based on the needs of society, Wu Huiqun attaches great importance to cultivating students' "information quality". "We need to keep our heads down and look up," he said.
Medical students have a heavy study load and spend a lot of energy on coursework and practice, and after studying, they must be good at understanding and learning about current information technology, and turn these technologies into better medical solutions to serve patients and benefit mankind." "I hope that the medical students trained by Tong University can be more distinctive in 'information quality' than other institutions, and have more competitiveness in the era of artificial intelligence." Wu Huiqun put a glimmer of light in his eyes when he talked about the cultivation of new medical talents.
In recent years, Wu Huiqun has led students in the field of intelligent medicine, constantly conducting research and practice. He encourages students to use modern medical technology for social practice. In the summer of 2019, he served as an instructor for students' social practice, guiding them to use the self-developed fundus AI system to conduct fundus screening services for the elderly at grassroots community health centers. Through the AI recognition, the precise data of each service recipient was efficiently obtained, and the lesions were accurately captured.
At present, Wu Huiqun and his team apply new technologies such as artificial intelligence technology, digital twins and meta-universe to the medical field, and select outstanding projects to participate in various competitions, which are highly praised by the judges, and some of the projects have won the excellent innovation and entrepreneurship exhibits awards of the college and university section of the 21st China International Industry Fair.
In response to the rapidly rising incidence and death rate of lung cancer, several undergraduates proposed to Mr. Wu Huiqun the idea of applying artificial intelligence technology to screen pathological cells of lung cancer. Wu Huiqun knew that it would not be easy to realize this relatively avant-garde idea, but he has always been patient with his students and actively encouraged them.
Through days and nights of painstaking labeling and experimentation, the automatic identification of lung cancer pathology cells was finally realized. After a long and difficult journey, the project of "Eye to Recognize Cancer - The Leader of Lung Cancer Cytopathology Diagnosis Track" finally won the silver prize in the 7th China "Internet+" College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The project finally won the silver medal of the 7th China "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for College Students.
Gathering talents, showing the way, as an educator, Wu Huiqun has always been adhering to the original heart of education, willing to serve as a ladder, and happy to be the guide on the way of students' growth. In the eyes of the students, Wu Huiqun is a strict and warm teacher, treating work and scientific research meticulously, and caring for everyone in learning and life.
Wu Huiqun is very concerned about every stage of student growth, from welcoming new students to the old students graduated from school, from the beginning of the semester class meeting to the end of the academic performance analysis, from the careful guidance before the examination to the end of the written examination analysis of the exchange, Wu Huiqun always care about the students, for the growth of the students to become a success of a lot of effort.
In order to stimulate the innovative spirit of the students, Wu Huiqun often exchange ideas with students and encourage students to carry out scientific research. In the face of the students a little tender or sounds "out of tune" ideas, Wu Huiqun will never have a trace of impatience, he respected the students' ideas, as far as possible to create a good scientific research environment, patiently guiding the students to scientific research training, guiding them to find the correct direction of the study, for the students to achieve scientific breakthroughs to lay a solid foundation.
Wu Yingcheng, a student of clinical medicine major in 2016, expressed his strong interest in medical research to Mr. Wu when he was a sophomore. Combining Wu Yingcheng's interests and strengths, Wu Huiqun suggested that he conduct research in the field of bioinformatics. After a study and discussion, Wu Yingcheng finally chose the emerging direction of "Computational Biology and Genomics" and carried out the project "Research on the Regulatory Mechanisms of Immune Checkpoint PD-1/PD-L1 (PD-L2)".
Under the ****same guidance of several faculty members of the team, the project identified several key factors affecting PD-1/PD-L1 (PD-L2) through big data analysis combined with molecular and animal model validation, and revealed a new mechanism of tumor cells abnormally expressing PD-L1 (PD-L2). Finally, the project won the Grand Prize of the 16th Challenge Cup National Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition for College Students.
Jia Keren, a 2015 student of Clinical Medicine, proposed the idea of using bioinformatics analysis to study tumors during his undergraduate study, which was recognized and supported by Wu Huiqun, and he went to Peking University Cancer Hospital for further study after graduation. Kong Weizheng, a 2017 student of medical imaging, carried out research on artificial intelligence imaging under the guidance of Wu Huiqun, and this research experience helped him win the favor of his mentor in the fierce competition for exempted recommendation and become a direct doctoral student at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Chest Hospital.
In recent years, the undergraduates under Wu Huiqun's guidance have won numerous national competitions, including the silver medal in the 7th China "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for College Students, the special prize in the 16th Challenge Cup National Extracurricular Scholarly and Technological Works Competition for College Students, and the first prize in the National Basic Medical Sciences Innovation Competition for College Students. Seeing the students on the road to realize their dreams, Wu Huiqun heart feel immense happiness.
