School of Medical Devices and Food has developed from the only independent school of medical devices in China. The college has a strong professional teaching team, including 60 professors and associate professors, 40 teachers with doctoral degrees; Professor Wang Weiqi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a famous biomedical engineering expert, serves as the honorary president of the college; Professor Hua Zezhao, the first national master teacher and a famous expert in low-temperature biomedical technology, serves as the chief professor of the college. The School of Medical Devices and Food is an important training base for senior engineering and management talents in the fields of medical devices, pharmaceutical engineering equipment, food processing and food safety quality control. In 2008, it began to enroll medical device MBA. The number of graduate students has reached 200.

The college has complete experimental facilities, with 20 central laboratories and specialized laboratories in biomedical engineering, medical device engineering, medical imaging engineering and food quality and safety engineering, with a laboratory area of 3000 square meters and fixed assets of 40 million yuan for experimental equipment.

In 2005, "Medical Device Engineering" was listed as a key discipline in Shanghai; undergraduate education was listed as a project of Shanghai Education Highland Construction; at the same time, it was awarded the project of Shanghai High-level Characteristics of Colleges and Universities. In 2006, "Modern Minimally Invasive Medical Devices and Technology" was listed as an engineering research center construction project of the Ministry of Education, which is the first one in local universities in Shanghai. In 2007, "Medical Engineering and Food Safety" was listed as one of the six major disciplines of Shanghai University of Science and Technology, which is the key development of the university.

There are three second-level disciplines of doctoral programs, "Thermal Science and Technology of Biosystems", "Medical Biofluid Mechanics and Technology" and "Biomedical Optics and Visual Optics" . There are master's degree programs in the first discipline of "Biomedical Engineering", master's degree programs in the second discipline of "Food Science", and master's degree programs in the engineering of "Bioengineering".
