Baoting County is directly under the jurisdiction of Hainan Province.
In December 1987, the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was abolished, and in the same month, Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was established under the Hainan Administrative Region.

In March of 1935, the government of Guangdong Province decided to set up Baoting County.
Baoting was liberated on February 11, 1948, and the Baoting County Democratic Government was set up on April 16, with the county government located in Baoting Town, which was subordinate to the Commissioner's Office of Qiongya East District.
