Tianjin First Center Hospital was founded in 1949, originally known as China Textile Hospital, and later merged with Post and Telecommunications, Tianhe, Enguang and other hospitals, renamed Tianjin First Center Hospital. The hospital is divided into three parts: the main hospital, the East Hospital and the Binhai Hospital. The hospital covers a total area of 68,000 square meters with a building area of 141,000 square meters. The main building of the hospital has 23 floors and is in the shape of a "Y" structure.
The hospital is a modern, comprehensive, Grade 3A hospital featuring organ transplantation, emergency medicine and otorhinolaryngology, integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and prevention, and is one of the three major medical centers in Tianjin. The hospital has 1100 beds, 35 clinical departments, 6 master's degree authorization points, 6 research institutes, i.e. Tianjin Organ Transplantation Research Institute, Tianjin Emergency Medicine Research Institute, Tianjin Ear, Nose and Throat Research Institute, Tianjin Imaging Medicine Research Institute, Tianjin Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Institute, Tianjin Hospital System Engineering Research Institute, and 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Health, i.e. Critical Illness Emergency Medicine Key Laboratory. The Hospital's Organ Transplant Center is currently the largest organ transplant center in Asia, and is the birthplace of clinical liver transplantation in China as well as the "Transplantation Technology Application Base" in Tianjin. Professor Shen Zhongyang, an expert in organ transplantation, is the director of the center. The center successfully completed human allogeneic in situ liver transplantation in May 1994, and the patients have survived for more than ten years. It created a new record of post-operative survival of liver transplant patients in China. Since then, it has created and maintained a number of records in the history of liver transplantation in China, such as the total number of surgeries, the success rate of surgeries, the survival time of patients after surgery, the total number of surviving patients, and the number of surgeries in a short period of time. A new breakthrough has also been made in the prevention and treatment of recurrence of hepatitis B after liver transplantation - the first case of transplantation applying biotechnology to remove hepatitis C virus by intraoperative adsorption of the active receptor was successfully carried out, which solved the problem that after hepatitis C patients have been treated by liver transplantation, the new liver in the transplanted body will be 100% re-infected with hepatitis C. By June 2006, more than 2,100 liver transplants and 1,300 kidney transplants had been completed. In order to consolidate and develop the national leading position in the field of organ transplantation, the Tianjin Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government invested about 170 million Yuan and the Organ Transplantation Center Building with a floor area of 46,000 square meters was completed and put into use in August 2006, which has injected new vigor and vitality into the development of the organ transplantation business in Tianjin.
The Institute of Emergency Medicine gives full play to the advantages of experience, technology and equipments in treating emergency, critical and serious diseases, and has treated a large number of patients with acute and critical diseases; the Institute of Emergency Medicine of the hospital is a key discipline in Tianjin and was founded by Prof. Wang Jinda, an expert in combining traditional Chinese and western medicine with critical diseases. The institute has ICU and blood purification center of international advanced level, advanced laboratory instruments at home and abroad, and molecular biology research room, immunity research room, Chinese medicine preparation room, animal laboratory, clinical laboratory, and was approved as the key laboratory of emergency medicine for critical illnesses of the Ministry of Health in 1997. The Institute of Otorhinolaryngology of the hospital is a key discipline in Tianjin, the founder of which is the famous otorhinolaryngologist, Prof. Lin Bijin, and then under the leadership of Prof. Yang Baoqi, the first batch of experts in Tianjin, the Institute is constantly developing and expanding. It is now divided into six departments: Head and Neck Surgery, Otology, Rhinology, Integrative Medicine, Voice Medicine and Functional Examination.
