The school was founded in Beijing in September 1958, and the first president was Guo Moruo; after the establishment of the school, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) implemented the policy of "running the school as a whole and combining the departments with the institutes", and gathered a number of famous scientists, such as Yen Ji-Chi, Huaruo Geng, Qian Xuesen, Zhao Zhongyao, Guo Yonghuai, and Zhao Jiuzhang, etc., and the second year of the founding of the school was listed as a key university of the country.
