Manual mode can be accessed in both D and S modes.
The driver only needs to gently press the shift paddles to send a signal to the transmission computer to tell it to upshift. The shift paddles act as a quick-shifting device that can greatly improve driving maneuverability. The shift paddles are usually located behind the steering wheel. To operate the shift lever, the driver usually just pushes the gear into D, S or manual mode. Using the shift lever, the driver can shift up and down without taking his hands off the steering wheel.
