The origin of the Waldorf
In 1893, William Waldorf Astor (WilliamWaldorfAstor invited the famous designer Henry Hardenberger to design the first Waldorf located in New York City on Fifth Avenue. Four years later, Henry Hardenbergh built the 17-story Astoria Hotel for Waldorf's cousin John Jacob Astor IV next to the Waldorf Astor Hotel. Celebrity politicians and the Waldorf
In 1897, Li Hongzhang, then Governor-General of Zhili and Minister of Northern China in the Qing Dynasty, stayed at the former Waldorf Astoria during his visit to the United States, making him the first Chinese dignitary in history to stay at the hotel.
On Oct. 1, 1931, when the Waldorf Astoria opened at its new Park Avenue address, President Hoover gave a congratulatory speech in the Cabinet Office of the White House, saying that the opening of the hotel in the midst of America's unprecedented Great Depression was a sign of the nation's courage and confidence.
October 1957, Queen Elizabeth II visited the United States and stayed in New York City, where she stayed at the Waldorf Astoria.
In 1974, Deng Xiaoping, during his first visit to the U.S. to attend the United Nations General Assembly meeting, also went to this hotel to meet with Kissinger to discuss Sino-U.S. relations, and since then successive Chinese leaders, like dignitaries from other countries around the world, have made the Waldorf Astoria their place of stay when they visit New York.
Not only that, but General MacArthur donated his personal desk to the presidential suite, President Reagan's gold oval mirror and table with an eagle statue base were placed in the suite's foyer, Presidents Carter and Johnson donated table ornaments and wall sconce lamp bases, respectively, and a rocking chair belonging to President Kennedy adorns one of the bedrooms.
