POCT, point-of-care testing, refers to clinical testing performed next to the patient's base bedside testing (bedside testing), usually not necessarily a clinical laboratory technician to carry out. Is in the sampling site immediately analyzed, eliminating the complex processing of specimens in the laboratory test, a new class of rapid test results.
POCT noun composition includes point (place, time), care (health care) and testing (testing). Foreign definitions of POCT have "on the patient's medical site for any medical measures needed to carry out the test. Not in the central laboratory but in the patient's side of the test, the results of which can improve the patient's health care measures", "developed by the clinical laboratory, but not in the laboratory facilities for the patient's determination, do not need to be fixed, dedicated space. The kit and together are hand-carried or transported to the patient for immediate testing in situ."
The main criteria for POCT are that it does not require a fixed testing site, the reagents and instruments are portable and can be operated in a timely manner.POCT does not require specialized clinical testing services.
The main purpose of POCT is to get the results of the experiment faster. Advances in diagnostic and supportive technologies, improved understanding of disease, and improved treatment are the main reasons for the growing interest in POCT (financial pressures are a secondary factor). These advances have led to the near eradication of some diseases and the early diagnosis and better treatment of others.
Simplicity and ease of use are other features of POCT, which has become part of the diagnostic system by virtue of its ease of use; POCT assumes the functions of a laboratory without the need for traditional hospital laboratory equipment, and can be performed in the doctor's office as well as in a moving automobile; it is available to the patient 24 hours a day, regardless of time or place.
The biggest problem faced by laboratory personnel is controlling the cost of diagnosis. But the result is always a reduction in the cost of the individual test, rather than an overall reduction in the cost of the patient's entire visit. In terms of "cost per test", POCT is relatively high; however, in many cases the use of POCT not only improves the results but also reduces the use of resources, patient hospitalization time, sampling time, and healthcare staff time.
