Experiment on making oxygen by heating potassium chlorate
Experimental apparatus:
Reaction setup: iron stand, alcohol lamp, test tubes, rubber stopper, rubber tubing
Collection setup: sink, gas collection cylinder, catheter
Pharmaceutical: Potassium Chlorate and Manganese Dioxide (Catalyst)
Potassium Chlorate: white powdery solid, poisonous, soluble in water.
I. Assemble the equipment:
Assemble in the order from bottom to top, left to right. First put the iron frame table → put the alcohol lamp → install the test tube → install the catheter → put it into the sink.
Second, the airtightness test (thermal expansion and contraction method or microthermal method)
assembled equipment as shown in the figure, to form a closed system, one end of the conduit into the beaker below the liquid level, the test tube plug should be plugged tightly, and then cover the test tube with a hand to observe the mouth of the test tube in the beaker of bubbles, let go of your hand, the water will flow back to the end of the conduit to form a section of the column of water, that is, the airtightness of a good.
Three, into the drug
Using a medicine spoon to take out the solid powder of potassium chlorate from the bottle, and slowly reach into the test tube, the sample into the bottom of the test tube, and the drug should be evenly spread in the bottom of the test tube, in the test tube near the mouth of the fluffy cotton, and then stuffed tightly in the test tube plug.
Four, heating
Lit the alcohol lamp, between the bottom and the middle of the test tube back and forth 4~5 times for preheating, and then use the external flame to focus on the solid for heating.
V. Collecting gases
When the bubbles come out continuously and evenly from the mouth of the catheter, stick the mouth of the catheter into the collecting cylinder full of water, when you see bubbles coming out from the outer edge of the mouth of the cylinder, proving that the collection is full, cover the mouth of the cylinder with a piece of woolen glass in the water and move it out of the water. Place it squarely on the table top.
