Resolution is a parameter used to measure the amount of data within a bitmap image, usually expressed as dpi (dots per inch). Simply put, the resolution of a camera is the ability of the camera to resolve an image, i.e. the number of pixels in the camera's image sensor.
The highest resolution is the size of the camera's ability to resolve an image at its highest, i.e., the highest number of pixels in the camera. Hikvision's products are more often than not 0.3 megapixel CMOS with a resolution of 640 x 480, and 0.5 megapixel CMOS with a resolution of 800 x 600. The two numbers of the resolution indicate the unit of the number of points that the picture takes up in length and width, and the aspect ratio of a digital picture is usually 4:3.
