Use of cesium

Cesium is used for the following purposes:

1. Industry: Cesium-137 is mainly used to manufacture photocells, photomultiplier tubes and television camera tubes, and is used as a getter for vacuum tubes. Cesium iodide activated by sodium and thallium can be used to manufacture industrial and medical X-ray image amplification plates or fluorescent screens. The artificial cesium ion cloud formed by cesium can propagate and reflect electromagnetic waves.

2. Medical treatment: Cesium-137 is a commonly used gamma radiation source. Radioactive sources are used to calibrate radiotherapy equipment for cancer treatment, and can also be used to calibrate radiation monitoring instruments for monitoring radiation levels of radiotherapy personnel and patients. These medical equipment and instruments need to be checked regularly to ensure their accuracy.

3. Food safety: Cesium 137 can also be used to kill bacteria and microorganisms in food, thus increasing the storage time of food. This method has the effects of inhibiting mildew and keeping fresh, and the irradiated food will not carry radioactivity and will not leave toxic substances.

Distribution of mineral deposits:

The contents of 1 and cesium in the crust are 2× 10-3%. Cesium garnet is a kind of cesium-containing mineral and the main raw material for extracting cesium. 34 kinds of cesium isotopes have been found, among which cesium-133 is the only stable isotope in nature, and the rest are radioactive isotopes produced by uranium fission.

2. The mineral water in Durkheim is rich in cesium compounds, so metal cesium can be extracted from the mineral water in Durkheim.

3. Cesium is generally distributed in water with more minerals.
