Southern Taiwan's Cutting-Edge Medical Milestone Kaohsiung Chang Gung Proton Therapy Center Opens

Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital spent more than 5 billion yuan to build the "Yung Ching Advanced Cancer Center".

Adhering to Y.C. Wang's philosophy of "what is taken from the society is used in the society" and providing international standard medical services to cancer patients in Southern Taiwan, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital has spent more than 5 billion RMB to build the "Y.C. Cutting-Edge Cancer Medical Center". A few days ago, Chen Ju, Secretary General of the Presidential Office, Wang Rui Hui, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chang Gung Medical Foundation, and Wang Chih-Hsi, President of Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital cut the ribbon to open the center, and witnessed the major milestone of cutting-edge medical care in Southern Taiwan.

Proton therapy can accurately combat cancer cells

Proton therapy is a type of radiation therapy, which is one of the most advanced and expensive medical devices in the world, and the number of treatments worldwide is increasing rapidly. The advantage of proton therapy over X-ray therapy is that the proton beam can be controlled to release a large amount of energy at a specific depth in the organism, while releasing less energy in the traversing path, and no radiation at all in the area after the tumor, a characteristic known as the Bragg Spike.

With these characteristics, proton beams can not only accurately hit cancer cells, but also reduce the radiation dose to normal tissues and side effects, which improves the quality of life of the patients after treatment, and also reduces the risk of secondary tumors caused by radiation, and has gradually become an effective and better radiation therapy for certain tumors. Proton therapy is suitable for radiotherapy of tumors in different parts of the body, but the more localized and close to a single side of the body, the better. Many tumors with high curative potential can be cured by proton therapy (or combined with surgery and chemotherapy) with a good cure rate and low side effects, but it is not suitable for patients with diffuse or multiple metastatic tumors.

Proton therapy in Linkou and Kaohsiung

In 2015, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou was the first to use proton equipment and set up the "Yongqing Cutting-Edge Medical Campus", and Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital was planning and preparing to set up the "Yongqing Cutting-Edge Cancer Medical Center", and the Ministry of Health and Welfare approved the establishment of the "Yongqing Cutting-Edge Cancer Medical Center" in December 27th 2012, which was the first to use the proton equipment. The Ministry of Health and Welfare approved the installation of proton machines at Kaohsiung Chang Gung, and the treatment center has a total floor area of 7,395 ping. construction began on December 2, 2014, and was awarded a model construction site by the city government in 2015, and obtained the relevant licenses in October 2018, and is scheduled to be opened on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the founder of Y.C. Wang's death.

Estimated 15,000 treatments per year

Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital said that after the opening of the "Wing Ching Cutting-Edge Cancer Medical Center", it will open three treatment rooms one after another, and initially open the first treatment room first, due to the acceptance of the acceptance at the same time and the adjustment of the other two rooms, the daily service can only be provided for the time being 8 hours. Based on the estimation that a patient needs half an hour for treatment, about 16 patients can be treated per day. After the second and third treatment rooms are added, the maximum number of patients that can be treated per day will be about 60, and it is estimated that 15,000 people can be treated with proton therapy per year.
