Zhoushan City is a city in the central area of the Yangtze River Delta, an important city in the Shanghai metropolitan area, and China's fourth national new area Zhoushan Islands New Area, an international port and island tourist city. Zhoushan City, east of the East China Sea, west of Hangzhou Bay and Ningbo City, north of Shanghai.
Zhoushan has 2 districts and 2 counties under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 22,200 square kilometers, of which 20,800 square kilometers are sea area, and as of the end of 2022, Zhoushan City has a resident population of 1.17 million. The annual cargo throughput of Ningbo Zhoushan Port ranks the first in the world, and the container throughput ranks the third in the world. in 2022, Ningbo Zhoushan is ranked the world's 10th in the comprehensive ranking of international shipping center cities.
Topography and Geomorphology
Zhoushan City has a complex geological structure, with most of the strata covered by Mesozoic Jurassic and Cretaceous volcanic-sedimentary rocks, with occasional outcroppings of Upper Paleozoic metamorphic rocks, and Cenozoic quaternary rocks distributed at the edges of the islands. The islands are covered with thick Mesozoic volcanic rocks, including three major types of volcanic eruptions, intrusive rocks and metamorphic rocks. The archipelago is arranged in a southwest-northeast direction, with the terrain tilted from southwest to northeast. The southern islands are large, high in elevation and densely arranged, while the northern islands are small, low in terrain and sparsely distributed.
The island is hilly and undulating, with high hills accounting for 9%, low hills accounting for 61%, and plains for 30%, forming different soil types and patterns of agricultural utilization. The highest peak on Peach Blossom Island is the Confrontation Mountain, which is 544 meters above sea level. Most of the island peaks are below 200 meters above sea level, with a difference of 400 meters in the southern half of the terrain. The total length of the coastline is 2,444 kilometers, of which 1,855 kilometers are bedrock coasts, 530 kilometers are artificial coasts (sea ponds), 50 kilometers are gravel coasts, and 13 kilometers are muddy coasts (coats). There are 200.7 kilometers of shoreline above 15 meters of water depth and 103.7 kilometers of shoreline above 20 meters of water depth.
