Taishan City, formerly known as Xinning, was abolished as a county and established as a city in 1992, and is administered by Jiangmen City. It is located in the southwestern part of the Pearl River Delta, adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, and bordered by the South China Sea in the south.

Taishan is located in the southwest of the Pearl River Delta, neighboring Zhuhai Special Administrative Region in the east, Xinhui District of Jiangmen in the north, Kaiping, Enping and Yangjiang in the west, and facing the South China Sea in the south. Adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, it is a vast area with a total land area of 3,286 square kilometers.
As of December 31, 2017, Jiangmen City governs three municipal districts, namely Jianghai District, Pengjiang District and Xinhui District, and is in charge of four county-level cities, namely Taishan City, Heshan City, Kaiping City and Enping City.

Taishan is known as "the first hometown of overseas Chinese" and "two Taishan's inside and outside". Chen Yixi, the founder of the Xinning Railway, the first privately-run railroad in China, Gary Locke, the former U.S. Ambassador to China, and Wu Bingzhi, the former Governor General of Canada, are all outstanding representatives of overseas Taishan villagers.
