Wu Jiahong: Healthy food may be the culprit of "food allergic reaction"

A female teacher in her thirties, who is tired for a long time, is prone to catch a cold, oral ulcers and aches all over her body after three or five times. Therefore, she pays special attention to her diet, and makes "Li Jing Soup" with fruits and vegetables with various "antioxidants" every day in an attempt to save her health. Unexpectedly, her fatigue has not improved, and she is still worried about it. I suggested that she do food sensitivity IgG test and found that she was sensitive to more than 30 kinds of vegetables, fruits, beans and nuts, and several of them were ingredients of Jinglitang! These foods, which are recognized as healthy and can replenish energy, are not suitable for her, but cause chronic inflammation in her body and consume her energy bit by bit.

There are many kinds of food in the world, and everyone is an independent individual with different genetic factors. Every food molecule that enters different individuals may trigger different immune responses. Even natural food, even food that is generally considered healthy, may not be suitable for everyone. For example, if someone eats crabs and shrimps, acute urticaria's allergic reaction will immediately appear all over his body. Some people have lactose intolerance because they lack enzymes that break down lactose. Once they drink milk, the intestines can't digest lactose smoothly, which will produce gastrointestinal symptoms of different severity, such as abdominal pain, flatulence and diarrhea. These symptoms are all adverse reactions to food, which usually occur within minutes to hours after eating. If you can detect it yourself, try to avoid this kind of food in the future.

But there is a situation that comes slowly and is not easy to be noticed. Symptoms are diverse, repetitive, disturbing and affect the quality of life. Even, there are people around you and me who unconsciously suffer from this situation, that is, "food sensitive reaction." Unlike acute allergic reactions (caused by immunoglobulin IgE), such as urticaria, runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, itchy eyes and even shock caused by respiratory tract, "food sensitive reactions" often occur several hours or even two or three days after contact with food. The related symptoms are not immediate and not necessarily serious, but they are still emotional, repetitive and annoying. Such symptoms may be from head to toe, such as chronic headache (such as migraine), inattention, anxiety, sleep disorder, chronic eczema, chronic urticaria, acne, psoriasis, rhinitis, chronic fatigue, dyspepsia, abdominal pain/diarrhea/bloating (such as intestinal dryness), weight loss, head retardation, joint pain and other symptoms, which may be related to "food allergic reaction".

Many people think that the symptoms of food allergy are limited to itchy skin, urticaria, sneezing and runny nose. Few people associate symptoms other than skin and nose with food. Even if they once suspected that it was caused by food, they often couldn't remember what they ate two or three days ago. In addition, the variety of food is ever-changing, and it is difficult to find the culprit leading to symptoms.

Because of this, such food sensitive reactions often occur repeatedly in life. Some patients have done a common acute allergen test (IgE test), trying to find out the food that may cause symptoms, but may not find the murderer, because "food allergic reaction" belongs to non-IgE immune reaction, which is different from the acute allergic reaction caused by IgE, so there is naturally no reason to do IgE test. People with "food allergy" are helpless and don't know what to do. They often take medicine to suppress symptoms when symptoms come, so as to make themselves feel better and live in peace with symptoms. But more importantly, in order not to let the symptoms persist or even worsen, it is suggested to try to find out your sensitive food first, and then further improve your physical condition through diet adjustment.

Because people's immune response and intestinal health will be affected by the external environment, diet and lifestyle, after three to six months of diet adjustment, we can not only observe the changes of symptoms by ourselves, but also follow up again to see if our sensitive reaction to food has improved and let ourselves know what else needs attention. Common food sensitive lists include: wheat, milk, eggs, soybeans, nuts, peanuts, seafood and so on. They are often raw materials in our daily diet, so people who have chronic symptoms but can't find the cause should pay special attention to whether they eat a lot of sensitive foods unconsciously.

Author/Dr. Wu Jiahong

Dean of the Hong Xin Clinic. Bachelor of Medicine from Department of Medicine of National Taiwan University, part-time attending physician from Department of Family Medicine of National Taiwan University Hospital, obesity expert from Taiwan Province Obesity Medical Association, deputy secretary-general of Obesity Research Association of the Republic of China, member of Taiwan Province Medical Nutrition Medical Association, member of American Functional Medicine Association (IFM), core course training of American Functional Medicine Association, and expert from American Anti-aging Medical Association (A4M) passed the examination.

Dr. Wu believes that the physiological operation of human tissues, systems and organs are interrelated and influenced each other, rather than operating independently. Facing the trend of chronic diseases, we can try to break away from the framework of "disease-centered" and treat the symptoms independently, and integrate into the holistic nursing thinking of "creating health" and "people-centered". Through the adjustment of diet nutrition, physical activity, sleep rest, stress management, peripheral relationship, psychology, emotion and mind, the physiological functions of various systems of the body can operate harmoniously, thus achieving an ideal health state. He advocates that everyone can start from himself, and then influence the people around him to make everyone better and healthier together.
