Can you make wine in plastic containers?

When brewing wine at home, glass bottles are the most ideal containers for alcohol fermentation and wine bottling. The reason is that the glass material itself will not make the wine smell. Cork plugs, synthetic plugs or screw caps can be used for glass bottles. If the storage conditions are ideal, wine can be stored for several years without deterioration.

Then, if you don't need to store wine for a long time, but only for a short time, can you use plastic bottles? Compared with glass bottles, the air tightness of plastic bottles is slightly worse, and it is easier for trace oxygen to penetrate, thus affecting the quality of wine. However, within one year, the quality of wine will not be significantly affected by oxygen. So plastic bottles can actually store wine for a short time. It should be pointed out that plastic materials are more likely to react with wine than glass materials, and the material of plastic bottles must belong to food-grade PET plastics.

Compared with glass bottles, another weakness of plastic bottles is that cleaning and disinfection are more troublesome. Plastic has low hardness and scratches on its surface, which makes it difficult to clean it thoroughly. When cleaning plastic bottles, you can use a bottle brush to remove stains, paying special attention to the easy residue of stains on the bottle mouth and bottom.

The bottle cap of a plastic bottle can be original or bought from a store, but it must be very suitable to ensure that the bottle mouth can be tightened. Bottle caps should also be cleaned and disinfected before use. In addition, plastic bottles do not react chemically with carbonic acid, so it is also a good choice to store sparkling wine in plastic bottles in a short time.
