Palatal tonsils are a pair of flat oval lymphoid organs located in tonsillar fossa. Tonsillar fossa: a triangular depression in the lateral wall of oropharynx between palatopharyngeal arch and palatoglossal arch. Mucosal epithelium sinks into the parenchyma to form a pit, which is called tonsil pit.
The anterior lower part of tonsil is covered by palatoglossal arch, and the uncovered part of its upper end is surrounded by the membrane of tonsil body composed of connective tissue, which is only connected with pharyngeal muscle through loose connective tissue. This is usually the site of abscess formation around tonsil. The pharyngeal lymphatic ring consists of palatal tonsil, pharyngeal tonsil, pharyngeal tonsil and lingual tonsil.
