Is SF6 poisonous? What is the function?

Non-toxic, its functions are as follows:

1, a new generation of ultra-high voltage insulating dielectric materials. As a good gas insulator, it is widely used in gas insulation of electronic and electrical equipment.

2. It can be used in the process of smelting and casting non-ferrous metals, and can also be used for degassing and purifying aluminum and its alloy melt. In microelectronics industry, sulfur hexafluoride can be used to etch silicon surface and remove organic or inorganic films on semiconductor materials, and can be used as a dopant for single-film optical fiber isolation layer in the process of optical fiber manufacturing.

3. It is mainly used for arc extinguishing in high-voltage switches and as insulation material in large-capacity transformers and high-voltage cables.

4. Used as gas insulator for electronic equipment and radar waveguide.

Extended data

Sulfur hexafluoride gas has stable chemical properties. Slightly soluble in water, alcohol and ether, soluble in potassium hydroxide. Does not react with sodium hydroxide, liquid ammonia and hydrochloric acid. It does not react with copper, silver, iron and aluminum in a dry environment below 300℃. The temperature below 500℃ has no effect on the corresponding time.

It reacts with sodium metal at 250℃ and with liquid ammonia at -64℃. When mixed with hydrogen sulfide and heated, it will decompose. At 200℃, in the presence of specific metals such as steel and silicon steel, it can promote its slow decomposition.

Sulfur hexafluoride gas insulated pipeline transmission line has the advantages of small dielectric loss, large transmission capacity and can be used in high drop occasions, so it is often used to replace conventional oil-filled cables at the outlet of hydropower stations.
