United Nations Chinese Language Day United Nations Chinese Language Day

April 20, 2012 ushered in the third United Nations Chinese Language Day, and various celebration activities were held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 19th. Lectures on traditional Chinese culture, live demonstrations of Hunan's "Nvshu", health Qigong performances, etc., attracted more international friends to Chinese culture.

The celebration started with a song and dance performance. The New York Chinese dance troupe Caifeng Dance Troupe performed a fan dance full of rich Chinese local customs. Then the actors dressed in cheongsam sang and danced gracefully to the accompaniment of "The Beauty of Taihu Lake". Hong William, the former first violinist of the Central Orchestra of China, played the famous Chinese violin solo "Xinjiang Spring" with an unrestrained and enthusiastic music style. All the United Nations staff and diplomats present applauded.

Among the various activities, a mother and daughter (78-year-old He Jinghua and her daughter Pu Lijuan) from Jiangyong County, Yongzhou City, Hunan Province, demonstrated the "Nüshu" text and related customs on the spot, setting off a climax. "Nvshu" is a kind of female writing spread in Jiangyong County, Hunan and surrounding areas. This mysterious language is only used by women and describes women's lives. It has been circulated for hundreds of years, and its origin is unknown. In addition to displaying the "Nüshu" written on books, fans and woven handkerchiefs, the mother and daughter also recited the "Nüshu" work "Teaching Women". When introducing the unique "Nüshu" folk custom of "Sitting in the Song Hall", the two sang two folk songs on the spot, one singing and one harmonizing, with ups and downs in their voices, and the songs were melodious. The voices from the mountains of China won the house. Finally, Pu Lijuan wrote the "Nvshu" text on the spot, which means "health, safety, good luck and good fortune". The font was slender and beautiful, and the diplomats present were amazed.

At the opening ceremony of Chinese Language Day, members from the China Health Qigong Association and the American Tai Chi Health Qigong Center appeared on the same stage dressed in Hanfu. The Baduanjin, Yi Jin Jing and Tai Chi push hands they performed were precise and precise, soft on the inside and strong on the outside.

The Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition has always been a traditional program on Chinese Language Day. On display this year are six meticulous paintings such as "Flowers and Birds" and "Far-sighted Vision" by the famous painter Wang Yuxia, the calligraphy work "Home and Everything Happens" by the famous calligrapher Liu Yinzhu, and Chinese landscape paintings by Bi Baoxiang, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Nanjing Normal University.

Li Baodong, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, expressed his appreciation for the Chinese Language Day event and has high hopes for it. He said that through these activities, everyone has enhanced their understanding and recognition of the ancient Chinese language, and has a deeper appreciation of the beauty, simplicity, profundity and breadth of Chinese, and has also deepened their understanding of Chinese culture. The United Nations Chinese Language Day uses the Chinese language as a carrier to build a bridge of friendly communication for people of different languages ??and ethnic groups around the world.

On April 20, 2015, the 6th United Nations Chinese Language Day celebration was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. When the United Nations was first established, Chinese was identified as the official language. After New China resumed its legal seat in the United Nations in 1971, the status of Chinese in the United Nations greatly improved, and in 1973 it was listed as a working language of the United Nations. In recent years, with the expansion of China's international influence, "Chinese language fever" has been continuously set off within the United Nations.

The Chinese government will take the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations as an opportunity to continue to promote the widespread use of Chinese in the work of the United Nations. It is hoped that the United Nations Secretariat will further implement the UN multilingualism resolution and treat and use the six official languages, including Chinese, equally. It is hoped that more United Nations staff and diplomats will join the team of learning Chinese in the future. I hope that the United Nations Chinese Language Day will be better and better, encourage more people to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture, and make greater contributions to promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and the United Nations, and between China and other countries around the world.

Ambassador Wang Min, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, delivered a speech at the celebration that night. He pointed out that Chinese has gradually developed from writing according to pictures to using words as paintings, and has gradually developed into an appreciable writing art. It is the most popular writing art in the world. One of the beautiful languages, it contains rich philosophy and carries the essence of Chinese culture. Chinese is also the most spoken language in the world, and it plays an important role in promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and the world. Xu Yongji, Education Counselor of the Chinese Consulate General in New York, said that learning Chinese can help to understand Chinese civilization and even Eastern culture.

The United Nations Chinese Language Day is sponsored by the United Nations Department of Public Information and has received strong support from the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and various United Nations departments related to the Chinese language. Language Day aims to promote linguistic and cultural diversity within the United Nations system and the equal use of the six official languages.
