2020, mackerel district gross regional product actually completed 37 billion yuan, calculated at comparable prices, an increase of 1.2% over the previous year. Sub-industry, the primary industry added value of 1.14 billion yuan, an increase of 0.6%; the secondary industry added value of 13.21 billion yuan, down 1.1%; tertiary industry added value of 22.65 billion yuan, an increase of 2.8%. In 1974, in order to meet the needs of economic development in the northeast region, the state decided to build Yingkou New Port (Mackerel Harbor) in Mackerel Township, Gai County, former Liaoning Province.
In 1983, the Yingkou New Port Construction Command was set up to begin construction work to promote the development of the port and provide supporting services and strong protection.
