The five basic foot positions of ballet: (with illustrations)
One position: legs open outward, heels opposite each other, feet in a straight line of 180 degrees. Shoulders relaxed, neck extended, buttocks clenched;
Second position: feet remain straight, open to the side, feet shoulder-width apart or open a foot away;
Third position: legs outwardly open, feet retracted inwardly to the point that the feet overlap, with the front heel close to the center of the back foot. The front foot covers half of the back foot;
Four-position: similar to the five-position foot, except that there is a foot's distance between the front and back feet, and the center of gravity is in the middle, with the front heel and the back toe joints in a line;
Five-position: the feet are close together, heel to toe.
