Sachs gives a very original insight into the design of other forms of group dance, and when discussing the Serpentine, he suggests that it originated from the Ring Dance, which is a form of ring dance that departs from the circle form. "The Serpentine Dance is represented in many places as a movement "through the labyrinth". Sachs states, "The essence of the labyrinth is action. The labyrinth building itself has no significance; it is only when one traverses the labyrinth that it has significance. This movement through the labyrinth embodies in advance the form of the 'serpentine dance', but the 'serpentine dance' does not pre-design anything for the labyrinthine building".
