Becoming famous in 1974, he became a leading film composer in the mid-1970s, scoring more than 130 Polish, French, German, and Hollywood films, working with famous directors such as Roman Polański and Francis Copola.
His awards include the Lili Boulanger Prize for Composition in France (1960), the Prize of the Polish Ministry of Culture and Arts (1967 and 1976), the Prize of the Union of Polish Composers (1975), the Louis Deluc Prize in France (1980) and the Prize of the Polish Cultural Foundation (2000). His score for Coppola's horror film Bram Stoker's Dracula (400 Years of Bloodsucking Fright) won the 1992 ASCAP Award in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Horror Film Award for Best Score.
Awarded the Order of the Polish Renaissance, in 2005 he was awarded the Gloria Artis Gold Medal by the Minister of Culture for outstanding cultural achievements of international standing, and in 2012 Wojciech Kilar was awarded the Order of the White Eagle "in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Polish culture, as well as his outstanding achievements in creative work", with the President of Poland presenting him with the award.
