Yang Liping transferred to the Central Nationalities Song and Dance Troupe after 1980. Famous for her "Peacock Dance", she is regarded as the "Second Generation Peacock King of China" after Mao Xiang and Knife Meilan. She was the first young dancer to hold a personal dance party in China, and was appointed as a lifetime member of the Philippine National Folk Dancers Association in 1987, and was named one of the top ten newsmakers by Beijing Daily in 1988, and the TV film "Yang Liping's Dance Art" was released in 1989.
Representative repertoire includes "Banna Three Colors", "Magical Footbells", "Love in the Hunt", "The Spirit of the Sparrow", etc. The performance of "The Spirit of the Sparrow" won the first prize for choreography and the first prize for performance in the Second National Dance Competition
