Profile

Name: WeirdAlYankovic

WeirdAlYankovic is the most famous song spoofing expert in the United States after Allan Sherman, and is the master of music humor in the MTV era. For more than 20 years, "WeirdAl" Yankovic has been poking fun at music as diverse as NewWave, grunge and gangsta rap.

Growing Up

Childhood

October 23, 1959, "WeirdAl" Yankovic, formerly known as Alfred Matthew Yankovic, was born in Lynwood, California, the only child of his family. A huge fan of polka star Frank Yankovic, "WeirdAl" Yankovic began taking accordion lessons at the age of seven. As a teenager, Yankovic became obsessed with the Dr. Demento radio show and was drawn to the humor of Allan Sherman, Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer and Stan Freberg.

The Teenage Years

While Dr. Demento was speaking at Yankovic's school in 1973, 13-year-old Yankovic handed him a tape of demos he had recorded at home. Three years later, Dr. Demento performed the Yankovic-penned song "BelvedereCruising" at the program. Later, Yankovic's music became a regular feature on Dr. Demento's show. During his high school years, Yankovic composed a large number of such hilarious songs. After graduating high school and entering college, Yankovic began studying architecture. While attending California State Technical College, Yankovic joined the school's radio station and began using "WeirdAl" as his nickname, and in 1979, the Los Angeles band The Knack's single "My Sharona" was a huge hit, which Yankovic parodied with his own singles "MyBologna" and "MyBologna". MyBologna" was not only a hit with Dr. Demento fans, but even the band theKnack loved the adapted single.

Youth

In 1980, after graduating from college, Yankovic wrote "Another One RidestheBus" based on Queen's #1 single "Another One BitestheDust" and recorded the single live in Dr. Demento's studio. recorded the single. The single was a huge hit in the underground music scene, and Yankovic followed it up by targeting Joan Jett&theBlackhearts' "ILoveRock'nRoll" by writing the song "ILoveRockyRoad". After a successful signing with ScottiBros. Yonkovic's debut album, "WeirdAl" Yankovic, was released in 1983. The music video for the single "Ricky" from it was a hit on the recently created MTV station.

Yankovic's subsequent success was inextricably linked to his use of music videos. Michael Jackson's "Beat It" was arguably one of the most critically acclaimed music videos since the birth of MTV's new medium, and Yankovic didn't want to miss out on the opportunity to parody it, recording a song that parodied "Beat It" for his 1984 album, "Weird" AlYankovicin3-D, which he called "Beat It. BeatIt's "EatIt". Every scene in the music video for "EatIt" is a parody of "BeatIt," even the red jacket (see right), and there's no doubt that "EatIt" earned a very high on-demand rating on MTV that year, for which Yankovic won the Grammy for Best Comedic Performance at that year's Grammy Awards. In addition to "EatIt," the ""Weird" AlYankovicin3-D" album spawned such popular singles as "KingofSuede" and "ILostonJeopardy".

Lifetime Achievements

In 1985, Yankovic released DaretoBeStupid, a comedy album recorded on CD in a new format, this time with the hit single "Likea Surgeon," which took aim at Madonna's bestselling singles "Likea Virgin" and ""Weird"". "DaretoBeStupid" went gold shortly after its release, as did "AlYankovicin3-D".In 1986, Yankovic released his fourth solo album, PolkaParty! EvenWorse, a clear parody of Michael Jackson's Bad, both in title and cover. The music video for the hit single "I'mFat" is also an exact parody of "Bad," which was directed and filmed by Martin Scorsese. I'mFat is set in the same subway station as Jackson's Bad. For "I'm Fat," Yankovic received his second Grammy.

In 1989, Yankovic appeared in the movie "UHF," for which he wrote the soundtrack. After a break, Yankovic released OfftheDeepEnd in 1992. The hit single "Smells Like Nirvana", a parody of Nirvana's hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit", reached the Top 40 on the US singles charts, and after 1993's "Alapalooza", Yankovic released another album, "Bad Hair Day", in 1996. BadHairDay eventually peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, making it the best charting album of the first 20 years of his solo career. In 1999 and 2003, Yankovic released Running with Scissors and PoodleHat, respectively, and in September 2006, "WeirdAl" Yankovic's 11th solo album, StraightOuttaLynwood, was released, featuring the lead single "White&Nerdy". amp; Nerdy" was a parody of Southern rapper Chamillionaire's U.S. chart-topping single "Ridin'".
