Learn Public Speaking in 21 Days

Learning to speak in public is one of life's successes, and any success comes from habit, a habit that takes 21 days to train.

Why 21 days? Because according to the research results of behavioral psychology, more than three weeks of repetition will form a habit, more than three months of repetition will form a stable habit. China's famous habit research expert Zhou Shiyuan said: "American scientists have conducted a large number of experiments on the formation of human habits. The experiments show that it takes 21 days to form a habit. Of course, this 21 days is an average, the habit is not the same, the degree of seriousness of each person is not the same, the degree of hard work is not the same, the time used is certainly not the same. Generally speaking, developing habits should be in a month, the key is the first three days."

At first I was skeptical about the accuracy of this statement. But the practice of teaching has made me agree more and more with this statement. Here's a look at the effect of my students training through the fixed-ear dance trick. A computer science major sophomore:

Just on the square, walking on and off the stage is quite awkward, walking more steps on the smooth. The first time I went up to speak, my body was a bit out of control, my movements were not coordinated, and I went up one flight of stairs less. After practicing a few times, I felt better and better. When the other classes came out to watch us, I didn't feel nervous and walked up and finished my speech out of habit. The guts are just practiced.

An accounting major junior students:

Through the practice of the three fixed, I once again realized the word "quiet". In the past, I was always impatient and did things quickly without paying attention to the details of the process. However, through the repeated practice of San Ding, I felt that my heart slowly began to "quiet down". In particular, the teacher taught us to count three seconds silently before speaking, which I found particularly useful. Because this method is both psychologically and physiologically, it helps me a lot to "calm my heart".

A sophomore accounting major:

Through a week of practice on the "double dance", the biggest change in my speech is that I can't help but dance and dance. Wednesday night, the accounting program has a lecture, my friend did not go, let me listen to the content of the return to her. When I gave her a vivid image of the end of the speech, she heartily praised: "Listen to you speak I have the feeling of being there!"

A junior majoring in Applied Economics:

A week has gone by in a hurry, and I have been practicing my "Human One", "Eight Hundred Soldiers Running to the North Slope", and "Citation" for another week. After a week of practicing, I feel "new". In the past, after practicing with the Whispering Method, I always felt tired in my abdomen and my muscles were sore. However, after practicing for a week, I obviously feel that my abdomen is not so tired after practicing. I think this is a new stage where the muscles have slowly started to familiarize themselves with such rhythms. I believe that soon, the muscle memory that Mr. Yin mentioned will also appear slowly.

A junior majoring in international journalism:

I remember the first time I took the class, the teacher told us to practice "Human One's" 20 times a day with the whispering method. With the intention of trying it out, I started practicing the whispering method. Once, twice, three times, hold back the laughter, tough to do three times "people one of the". To the later days, do ten times at a time will not laugh at the scene.

Through two weeks of training, although the time is very short, but feel some changes. The breath seems to be smoother when you speak, and even the language is closer to what you want to express.

A student majoring in food science:

In the last class, Mr. Yin talked about the "three fixations", which are the smile fixation, the eye fixation, and the standing fixation. The way to practice the smile is to read the word "cite" in front of the mirror. So I set up a memo on my cell phone to read the word "引" every time I looked at my cell phone. I probably looked at my phone dozens of times a day.

Every time I looked at it, I smiled, and gradually, my smile became more natural.

A junior computer science major:

In the past few days, according to Mr. Yin's word "fixing", I practiced "People One", "Eight Hundred Standard Bearers", and "Classmates" in front of the mirror. Looking at myself in the mirror has completely changed, the original timid and cowardly I disappeared, replaced by now full of self-confidence and vitality of me. Time and time again, practicing this simple and incisive dozens of words, from the outside to the inside of the change let me feel surprised.

A junior majoring in Applied Economics:

Mr. Yin said that my smile is not enough. After taking this course, I made up my mind to practise the sound of the word "引" a hundred times a day. From practicing for 10 minutes, to 15 minutes, to 20 minutes, to the point where my cheeks were numb, I realized that I was doing something I had rarely done before. Not only did the practice improve my smile, but I also learned the life lesson of persevering for a goal. This week's practice, in addition to smile, but also learned to practice, insist on practicing.

A sophomore majoring in finance from Hong Kong:

After three weeks of dedicated practice in the "Dance for Two," the poem "Facing the Sea, Blooming Flowers in Spring" has been y embedded in my memory. The process of reciting the poem is no longer just a quest to complete the poem in a pure manner, but each time there is a new insight, as if I am getting closer and closer to the author's vision. "I can!" *The spirit of this jingle is well illustrated in my students! These students above, all from a Mainland-Hong Kong joint university where I teach, come from various dialect areas and have no linguistic talent whatsoever, but after about 21 days of training, they have all achieved breakthroughs in their respective speech difficulties.

If they can, so can you, the reader! I am convinced!

2. Learning how to speak is like learning how to drive

Learning how to drive is a three-part process: teach the master, practice on your own, and drive on the road. It is also like learning martial arts, the first to imitate the move, a move to imitate the master's movements do not go out of shape; followed by the practice of the move, after learning to fist do not leave the hands of the hard work, to have perseverance of the strength; finally is the creation of the move, practice makes perfect, play to create their own school of thought. Have a higher ability to speak, it must be like learning to drive and learn martial arts, to go through these three stages of training.

Complex things should be simplified, simple things should be customized.

The training of speech ability includes two parts, one is to train; the other is to practice. Training refers to the teacher's instruction, so that students to recognize and experience the law of speech; practice refers to the practice of students, in practice, to master the law of learning to speak, and gradually become a kind of ability of their own. The combination of training and practice to master this ability.

3. What is the speech training "training"

The teacher's training, the key is to have a set of effective training methods. The first step is to make sure that you have a good understanding of what is going on in the world. Any learning, there is a trick, there is a most simple and good learning method.

The famous trainer Sun Lu Hong studied in Australia, to an Italian restaurant to work, the same is to wash dishes, he is much faster than others, because he found the trick of washing dishes in practice.

Sun Lu Hong said: "Italian pizza in the baking process, the cheese will melt on the plate, so such a plate is the most difficult to wash. I through a month of groping, found a fast and clean method of washing the plate, that is, first with hot water for five seconds, and then immediately put into the water with ice cubes, cheese and plate thermal expansion coefficients are not the same, naturally come off."

As you can see, finding a simple and efficient method can greatly improve the efficiency of learning and doing things.

The fixed-ear dance trick is a simple and fast method of speech training. It has two characteristics: good understanding and good imitation.

Good to understand, is to listen to understand, immediately understand. Teach people nutrition and health of the book at least 100,000 words, but for ordinary people, too specialized, too cumbersome, see you dizzy, but also can not find the essentials. And the famous health and wellness expert Hong Zhaoguang from the 100,000-word book to distill five words: red, yellow, black, white, green. Red, refers to tomatoes, sweet potatoes and other red foods; yellow, refers to corn, oranges and other yellow foods; black, refers to black fungus, blood vessel dredging food; white, refers to oats; green, refers to green tea. Later, it was summarized into eight words: eat everything, in moderation. You see, this expression, very vivid image, young and old, women and children, everyone understands, it is called a good understanding.

Learning to speak. Vocalization with gas, very necessary, but the method of learning is very professional and difficult. It is difficult to say clearly in one or two sentences.

When I first started teaching the "Speech Training" course, the biggest problem was that I had spent ten years solving the problem of using my breath, and now, in a semester's time, how to make students with no foundation in voice master the correct way to use their breath. I painstakingly taught them chest-abdominal joint breathing, but it was fine if I didn't, but once I did, they were confused and couldn't even speak. This forced me to think hard, and finally found a way to make the students understand at once: the whispering method. Because the way to whisper is to use the sound of Qi, must use the dantian Qi, and do not need to vibrate the vocal cords, the larynx is not tense, and the most critical thing is that everyone can whisper since childhood. This said, the students all understand.

This is called good understanding.

The second is good imitation, easy to imitate.

Teaching people to speak, can not just rely on others to understand, you must have a visible, tangible training methods, first draw a "gourd", so that people can learn to learn from the gourd to draw a dipper, from the external imitation of the beginning, the first imitation of the trick, and then practiced the trick, and finally the creation of the trick.

For example, the boldness of the speech, belonging to the psychological quality of people, but the "emotion in the shape of the outside", if the inner gutless will certainly be reflected in the external body language. For example, the eyes do not dare to look at people; facial expression stiff, no smile; stand crooked and so on. Through these external performance, we can see at a glance, the person speaking without confidence. Then, we can start from the training of external body language to train students' courage. For example, first teach him how to look at people with the eyes: to look at the audience on the left, then look at the audience on the right, and then look at the audience in the middle, from the imitation of the beginning of the repeated practice, into a habit, the guts can be trained out.

Another example is the practice of speaking vividly. Anyone who speaks with emotion must be speaking with gestures and facial expressions, for example, Yu Minhong of the New Oriental, the famous success expert Chen Anzhi, former Microsoft China President Tang Jun, are famous masters of speech. Those who speak without emotion must be those who speak without gestures and facial expressions. According to this law, I designed a set of gestures and facial expression training method. As long as you practice diligently, the problem of speech without expression will naturally change.

4. What is the "practice" of speech training

What is the purpose of practice?

The purpose of practicing is to make you develop the right habit of speaking.

The power of habit is amazing, there is such a fable. After a rich man died, he left a large inheritance to a distant relative of his. The relative was a beggar who had been begging for years. Since receiving the inheritance, he immediately became a millionaire. The news reporter came to interview the lucky beggar: "you inherited the inheritance, want to do the first thing is what?" The beggar replied: "I want to buy a good point of the bowl and a strong stick, so that later go out to beg for food more convenient." You see, although people have become a millionaire, but full of thought or how to beg for food, visible, habit on people's words and deeds have how much influence. A person's behavior in a day, only about 5% is non-habitual, the remaining 95% are habitual. According to the research results of behavioral psychology, more than three weeks of repetition will form a habit, and more than three months of repetition will form a stable habit.

How to learn to speak, this book can teach you a good understanding of good memory, effective method, but to become your correct speech habits, but also rely on your own persistent practice. Adhere to three weeks, will form a habit; adhere to three months, will form a stable good habit of speech.

5. The purpose of speech training: muscle memory

Good speech habits, the essence of the correct muscle memory. What do you mean by muscle memory? For example, playing the piano, when you start to learn, your fingertips do not listen to the command, stiff and clumsy, to play while thinking, because the ten fingers did not form a memory. And through repeated playing practice, finally without thinking, your fingers can play the tune very smoothly. That's when your hand muscles have formed the correct memory.

Correct speech habits also have to become muscle memory.

For example, there are people who speak a lot of vocal cord nodules, hoarseness, this is due to the wrong speech habits, and the wrong speech habits must be a wrong muscle memory. That is, when he is speaking, the veins of the muscles of the larynx are tense. And this book through the whispering voice practice method of repeated practice, "occupy the two ends, free the middle", is to make the muscles of the belly tense, the muscles of the cheeks and lips tense, and the muscles of the larynx will be relaxed. Once the method is mastered, it should be practiced over and over again, and finally become: as long as one opens one's mouth to speak, one does not need to think about the essentials of using the breath to make a sound, and one automatically achieves the tension of the muscles at the upper and lower ends, and the relaxation of the muscles in the larynx. This is the formation of the correct muscle memory, even if it is to develop the correct habits.

Another example is the training of eye fixation, to let the speaker's eyes always communicate with the audience, which is also a muscle memory. Because the speaker who is afraid to look at the audience, his eyelids are drooping, eye muscles are flaccid. And the speaker whose eyes are shining when he speaks, always communicating with the audience, his eye muscles must be tense and hard, has formed a kind of correct memory of eye muscles. Repeated eye training, you can let the speaker's eye muscles to form a kind of tense muscle memory, speech eyes full of vigor.

People who speak vividly are good at hand-waving. Hand-waving is a habit, but also a muscle memory. As soon as the speech, his hands and body will automatically start coordinating the movement. Through the training of gestures, we can let the speaker form the muscle memory of hand-waving, into a habit of speech.
