Born in 1963 in Shanghai to an ordinary working family with parents and two older brothers.
She attended Shanghai Hulin Middle School and Fudan Middle School.
After graduating from high school in 1980, she was admitted to the Red Flag Yueju Opera Troupe in Beijing and went to the Yueju Opera School in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province, where she studied the Xiao Sheng Zong Xu School, and played the role of Jia Baoyu in the Yueju Opera "Dream of the Red Chamber".
In 1981, she was introduced to Hu Ping, a dancer of the Oriental Song and Dance Troupe, by a teacher of the troupe.
In 1984, she was transferred to the Oriental Song and Dance Troupe, specializing in Japanese and Southeast Asian songs and dances.
