Wong Yiu Ming.
In 1987, the song won the Best Lyrics Award at the Fifth Hong Kong Top Ten Golden Songs Awards Ceremony, and during the 1980s, while absorbing foreign electronic music, Elder Liu also remained interested in folk music, and he composed the tune of "The Story of the Stone" .
The song was written with lyrics by Hong Kong cultural figure Mike, and the imagery was taken off from "Dream of the Red Chamber". Mike condensed the mood of the long novel "Dream of the Red Chamber" in 144 words. The song was written to accompany Zuni's stage play of the same name, and is the theme song for the stage play "The Book of Stones".
Song Appreciation:
"The Story of the Stone" is one of the very few Hong Kong pop songs that can be called an escape. The listener will not realize that it is a Hong Kong pop song, or even the dialect in which the lyrics are written. The song is free from geographical constraints.
The intro has a lot going for it, the best being the subtle dissonance of the chorus' main melody, played on guitar, in fourths. It's this little bit of dissonance that makes the whole song so enjoyable to chew on over and over again. Even on the chorus, which is dominated by Wong's meaty voice, this fourth-double-tonguing is still clearly audible, and was obviously intentional in the mixing.
The song's lyrics are full of bets against the real world, entanglements of love and Wong's poignant vocals; the music is quiet, and the outpouring of love is not hypocritical but sincere.
