Notes on Notre Dame de Paris

I. Summary: The story of the novel takes place in Paris in the 5th century A.D./KLOC-0, and the center of the plot clue is Notre Dame de Paris.

Quasimodo, the hero, is an abandoned child, born deformed: one-eyed, hunchbacked and lame. Claude, the vice bishop of Notre Dame de Paris, adopted quasimodo and made him a bell ringer when he became an adult. He is deaf again because of ringing the bell all the year round. Quasimodo is loyal to his duties, respects the deputy leader very much, and does as he says. On a holiday night, the vice bishop instructed quasimodo to rob the gypsy girl Esmeralda (the heroine of Notre Dame). She was hit by the king's guards and Captain Phobos saved the girl. The next day, quasimodo was sentenced and flogged in the square. Quasimodo is in great pain and wants water to drink. The vice bishop sneaked away after seeing it, but the gypsy girl boldly gave him water to drink. The poor bell ringer never thanked her again. Esmeralda is young and beautiful, and she can sing and dance. I fell in love with Fubis, the captain of the security guard, after being rescued on holiday night, and made an appointment to meet him. After learning about this, the vice bishop followed Phobos and hid in the place where they met. When Phobos and Esmeralda confided in each other, he stabbed Phobos with a dagger and slipped away. Esmeralda, who used to be scared, was arrested. The court accused her of witchcraft and murdered the king's bodyguard, forced her to confess by torture and sentenced her to hang. In prison, the vice bishop repeatedly told her that if she loved him, she would not die. But the girl was firmly in love with Phobos, and the deputy leader was furious and announced the execution of hanging.

The day before the execution, Esmeralda knelt in front of Notre Dame for a confession ceremony. Suddenly, quasimodo rushed out, picked up the girl, stepped into the threshold of Notre Dame and shouted, "Take refuge!" Guards, jailers and onlookers were afraid to act, because according to the religious laws and regulations at that time, everyone in the church should be protected by God, and even if he committed a capital crime, he could not be arrested. Quasimodo hid Esmeralda in a small room in the tallest tower, gave her her own food and bedding, guarded her door every night, and took good care of her.

Soon the vice bishop discovered the hiding place, and sneaked into the room at night, trying to rape the girl, but failed because the guarded quasimodo found it. The tramps were very angry when they learned that Esmeralda had been unjustly sentenced to death. They armed themselves and surrounded Notre Dame de Paris. However, because of her deafness, quasimodo mistakenly thought that they were coming to hunt down her enemies, leaving all kinds of building materials on the top of the church to repair houses, causing a large number of homeless casualties. King Louis Xi didn't like religious forces, but he was afraid of people's uprising, so he sent troops to suppress them. The archbishop took the opportunity to cheat Esmeralda away, dragged her to the guillotine and forced her to make a choice: go to the guillotine or promise to love him. The girl despised him and would rather die than surrender. The vice bishop dragged her to the front of the "mouse hole", told Ma Dai to catch her and ran to call the guards herself. Unexpectedly, Madai is the girl's mother. After losing her little daughter, she ran around looking for her with an embroidered little shoe. In desperation, she entered the living coffin-"mouse hole" and became a nun according to religion. When Esmeralda saw the little shoe, she also took out the same embroidered little shoe in the amulet, so mother and daughter met. The nun smashed the bars and hid her daughter in the "mouse hole", and the mother and daughter were immersed in the joy of reunion. At this time, the warden and guards called by the vice bishop surrounded the "mouse hole", so the mother and daughter were taken to the execution ground, the daughter was hanged, and the mother died tragically under the gallows.

Finally, Gasimo saw through the ugly soul of the archdeacon, pushed him off the tower and died. After that, he found Esmeralda's body and held it tightly until he died.

Second, the main characters:

Esmeralda: A symbol of goodness and beauty Esmeralda is an ideal figure portrayed by Hugo and a symbol of human beauty. She is pure and kind, loves freedom, is warm and generous, and has a firm character. She treats anyone with a good wish from the heart. She saved the life of the poet Glenguwa who strayed into the beggar's kingdom. She also let bygones be bygones and sent him water when quasimodo was punished; She holds the belief of love until death, has no doubt about the betrayal of her sweetheart (Phobos), and does not allow others to speak ill of him; Faced with Claude's arrogance, she would rather die than surrender.

Quasimodo quasimodo is the embodiment of "goodness" in Hugo's ideal, and a character created by Hugo according to the law of beauty and ugliness. He is ugly-he has an extremely ugly appearance: a geometric face, a tetrahedral nose, a horseshoe-shaped mouth, jagged teeth, one-eyed, deaf, hunchback ... It seems that all the misfortunes are God's arrival on him, and he is ridiculed, but he is noble at heart and a person with a sense of justice and affection. His love for Esmeralda is a kind of tenderness mixed with gratitude, sympathy and respect, a kind of selfless, eternal, noble and simple love, which is completely different from Claude's evil possessiveness and from the playboy in Forbes.

Claude: He has a dual personality. On the one hand, he is a representative of religious evil forces. He is dignified in appearance and sinister in heart, and will do whatever it takes to satisfy his desires. He instigated quasimodo to kidnap Esmeralda out of lust; He stabbed Phobos out of jealousy, but framed Esmeralda; He killed Esmeralda because he couldn't get her love. On the other hand, he is a victim of religious asceticism, and his long-term abstinence distorts his soul. The more he realized that he had lost the joy of the world, the more he hated the world and all the beautiful things in the world.

Forbes: Forbes is a young officer. He is charming and handsome, which accords with all girls' fantasies about love. He likes beautiful women, but he is never loyal and only wanders among flowers. Handsome and elegant in appearance, but vulgar and dirty in heart.

Granguwa: He is a wandering poet rescued by Esmeralda in the beggar kingdom. Understand the world, like to talk, but afraid of death. Because vagrancy makes him know this era and society more clearly, and also makes his choice between "rose" and "bread" more inclined to the actual "bread".

Cloban: the leader of beggars in Paris, the king of miracle courts, with a violent character and an aversion to evil. In order to rescue Esmeralda, he led beggars to Notre Dame de Paris, fought bloody battles with the king's imperial guard and died heroically.

Madai: Sister Goode, the mother of Esmeralda. After Esmeralda was kidnapped, she went insane and lived in seclusion as a nun in a tower.

Bai Hehua: Phobos' cousin and wife are gentle and beautiful, jealous and mean.

Third, good words and sentences:

1, the greatest buildings are mostly the product of society rather than individuals. They are not so much the creation of genius as the artistic crystallization of working people. They are national treasures, the accumulation of the century, and the residue left by the continuous sublimation of human social talents. In a word, they are a kind of rock formation. The wave of each era has added alluvial soil to them. Every generation has laid its own layer of soil on this immortal building, and so has mankind. -Notre Dame de Victor Hugo.

2. Symbols need to blossom in architecture, so architectural art develops with human thoughts and becomes a giant with thousands of arms, fixing floating symbolic thoughts in an eternal, visible and elusive form. -Notre Dame de Victor Hugo.

3. People, artists and individuals have not left their names on these big buildings, but human wisdom is condensed and concentrated there. Time is an architect and man is a mason. -Notre Dame de Victor Hugo.

4. All civilizations begin with theocracy and end with democracy. This law of freedom, which appeared after reunification, is also written in the architectural art-Notre Dame de victor hugo.

Fourthly, analyze quasimodo's character from two aspects: affection and love.

(A), the understanding of the family is not comprehensive

Quasimodo was abandoned since he was a child. Although he was trained by Claude, he never felt any affection. After all, Claude is a selfish man. In addition to his own interests, he has only one younger brother in his heart, which is the sustenance of his family. So when he saw quasimodo, he thought of his brother John, a poor "outcast". He decided to adopt the deformed child. He just regards it as an investment. If his brother makes any mistakes in the future, he will do this good thing in his name to make up for it. It's equivalent to adopting quasimodo, just a plan for a rainy day. Therefore, based on this starting point, Claude did not regard quasimodo as his family or adopted son. Then it is even more impossible for quasimodo to feel the treatment of his family. Even if he raised him, it was out of his own selfishness. But in quasimodo's life, only Claude and Esmeralda didn't treat him with special respect. Because others always avoid him, calling him a "living creature", "monster" and "worthy king of fools". Although he knows it in his heart, he can't talk, he can't talk. For Claude's kindness, he can only try his best to repay it. So he only listened to Claude who adopted him, and he repaid him with deep enthusiasm and infinite gratitude. This feeling is blind, because you can't tell right from wrong. When Claude instructed him to kidnap Esmeralda on the second day of April Fool's Day, he went without hesitation, which was absolute obedience. But when it was revealed that he was tortured alone, Claude just stayed out in the corner. In his subconscious, Claude is a relative, and there is affection between them. But the reality is far from him. He is always detached from normal people and has not clearly realized Claude's use of himself.

(2) Ideal love

When quasimodo was extremely thirsty on the execution ground, Esmeralda brought him water, which soothed his thirsty heart and made him feel the warmth of the world. He learned beauty and goodness for the first time and shed the first tear in his life. Since then, the sleeping love in his heart has revived. So that he began to re-recognize the beautiful human nature and began to shape a brand-new world view and outlook on life in his mind. We can't explore the love in his heart with normal thinking. After all, we can't see through his inner thoughts. Because of his mental and physical defects, he also has his own inferiority complex. He knew he was ugly, so he carefully avoided Esmeralda's sight. The most touching sentence is: "I am ugly, aren't I?" Don't look at me. Listen to me. "Maybe, at this moment, his humanity (love in his heart) has gradually awakened, but he just can't face it, has no courage to express it, and can only deliberately avoid it. Of course, in the face of such a beautiful, warm and kind woman, anyone will be emotional.

(C) in the face of the contradiction between affection and love

Claude gave him life and a feeling of love. In contrast, Esmeralda only "returned evil for good" to him, let bygones be bygones, and gave him a bowl of water to drink when he was dying of thirst. In this way, whose kindness is greater? As the saying goes: "the grace of dripping water, when the spring is reported"; What about "The Grace of Parenting"? This bowl of water is not comparable. Because of his affection for Esmeralda, quasimodo began to rebel against his adoptive father. In Notre Dame de Paris, when Claude tries to invade Esmeralda, he is prepared to save Esmeralda at the cost of his own life without violating his adoptive father. And when he thought that his adoptive father robbed Esmeralda, his heart was only secretly lost. In fact, it can be seen that family still carries weight in his mind at the moment. But in the end, when he saw Esmeralda hanged, he did not hesitate to push his adoptive father down the clock tower. At this moment, love occupied all of him, and also defeated the power of family and the grace of parenting. Claude killed Esmeralda because he couldn't get it, and quasimodo killed his adoptive father because of Esmeralda's death. Did he make such a decision because he realized the hypocrisy of his adoptive father and the cruelty of those dark forces? I don't think his thoughts have reached that level, because Claude only taught him to read and write. After all, if this is the case, then he is fully capable of protecting his beloved woman, and Claude can't do evil. In a word, love finally triumphed over affection, perhaps on impulse, perhaps because of premeditated in my heart, perhaps because of the awakening at that moment. Quasimodo finally chose love to repay his adoptive father's love for his beloved woman. Morally speaking, this is to eliminate evil for society and should be welcomed. However, we should not agree with this ingratitude.

(D) disillusionment

His love is destined to be wishful joy and unknown waiting, because there can be no ending. For him, it was not love, but a feeling of gratitude, similar to gratitude to Claude. Esmeralda fell in love with the handsome but hypocritical playboy Phobos, but he didn't want to look at the ugly quasimodo. It's like she chose "a dazzling crystal bottle with cracks, which can't supply the water of life to the flowers, but turns a blind eye to the rough and ordinary pottery pot that can make the flowers bright and fragrant". Although later generations gave them an ideal ending, it was also out of people's subjective pursuit of beauty. In fact, it is difficult to restore the true story to real life.

(5) The meaning given to the characters by the author

Hugo created more than a simple "ugliness". He endowed quasimodo with a kind of "beauty", which was different from the usual beauty. Let's begin to learn "how to look at beauty" and understand "what is beauty"? How to treat beauty? You can't just look at the appearance and ignore the inner beauty.
