"Ideal on the Shelf"

Everyone has the desire to express. Some people like to speak, constantly expounding their views and concepts; people like to sing, on a stage where no one is around; some people are willing to write blogs and publish their every day; some people still dip their brushes in ink and write diaries on rice paper. Poets write poems, musicians compose music, directors make movies, and painters paint, all for the sake of expression. I chose to paint, and chose realistic painting, naturally, because of the will to do so. Nowadays, realistic painting is just like a piece of bark in a big art tree, which won't get much attention, and I hope I can be a cozy bug on this piece of bark.

Beyond the Realm

We have multiple identities in real life, but there is a non-realistic character who only exists in the realm of the mind, who doesn't exist in reality, but only wanders in the realm of the mind. Here, I will often direct a play that is not complicated, letting myself become the audience at the same time; I will also play different roles in the play, sometimes it will be a piece of fluttering cloud, sometimes it will be a long shadow

In the non-reality of the state of mind, retaining my unbridled space, where there is only a materialistic expression, no materialistic framework. In the corner of reality, I always look forward to freely traveling inside and outside of my mind. Painting is an expression of the heart, and the state of mind makes the state of painting. It is only when there is something to think about that there will be a state of mind, and without thinking there will be no state of mind. In real life, I am constantly moving in and out of my mind and practicing in and out of my mind.

Drama: a kind of reality of the mind

-Wu Wei's oil painting offerings

Wen Wang Peng

Wu Wei's works have a strong sense of drama, and it can be said that he is one of the few artists in China nowadays who has a strong sense of humor. It can be said that he is one of the few young oil painters in China who focuses on the consciousness of human nature.

In the face of all kinds of things in this era, he thinks from multiple angles and cultural interfaces such as anthropology, psychology, sociology, etc., and analyzes the state of existence and mind of modern people from a profound and unique point of view; he decodes the psychological problems that modern people need to solve urgently with dramatic and interesting plots; he organically transforms the invisible consciousness of human nature into a credible reality by means of the dramatic expression of painting; and he uses his pictures to turn the human nature into a credible reality. Through the dramatic expression of his paintings, he organically transforms the invisible consciousness of the human mind into a credible reality; he describes the perplexities of modern people with his paintings, so that people can break out of the foggy mental thicket, recognize themselves, and face life bravely.

In Wu Wei's series of works such as "Compass Game - Prequel", "Prophecy and Revelation", "Birds and Lies", "Lonely Mountain Stunning Picture", and "The Game of the Karawakashi Bridge", the paintings are characterized by the intensification of a frozen moment, and the ideology of the characters is expressed through the static expressions, eyes, and gestures of the common recreational activities in life; and the works are narrated by the means of the ups and downs and rhythms of the picture and the body language. The works use the undulations, rhythms and body language contained in the pictures to tell the stories that happen at a specific time, "directing" the beauty of the plot and revealing the reality of the dramatic conflicts triggered by the emotions in the hearts of the characters. In this way, it conveys the painter's extreme humanistic concern and reflection on human nature.

The series of works such as "Tomorrow's Thoughts", "The Wind and the Moon", "The Situation", "Singing in the Middle of the Night", "A Dream in the Garden-1-3", "Lunar Eclipse", "Man Dance", and "A Slightly Late Spring", etc., are the portrait paintings of the oil painter Wu Wei, who, with his realistic skills, classical colors and dramatic sensory stimulation, creates a concrete embodiment of the theatrical characteristics of paintings; the works in these series are the concrete embodiment of the theatrical characteristics of paintings; the works in these series are the concrete embodiment of the theatrical characteristics of paintings. He uses realistic skills, classical colors and dramatic sensory stimulation to create a specific embodiment of the characteristics of drama in his paintings; the intuitive appearance of the characters and psychology in the hypothetical situations in his works, as well as the specific environments, specific psychological contents, and specific actions***harmonies, project the causal relationship and artistic connotations of dramatic paintings. Thus, showing the painter's independent aesthetic realm.

It should be emphasized that Wu Wei's use of light in the picture fully embodies the religious meaning and euphemistic classical charm, so that contemporary painting and classical spirit are blended. The theatrical stage lighting in his works has a poetic artistic style of "substituting light for scenery and conveying feelings with light", which implies the multiplicity of divinity, conflict, dream, mutation, solitude and contradiction.

In the vision of contemporary painting, we have the responsibility to use the formal language of art to artistically reflect on humanistic concern and humanistic consciousness:

Because the highest level of art is the art of humanistic spirit, the art of the mind;

Because art is a field of culture or a form of cultural value;

Because art is the artist's concern for reality and self-humanistic consciousness. the artist's concern for reality and the true expression of his or her self-concept of humanity.

May Wu Wei's dramatic oil paintings be a revelation to us in the creation of contemporary paintings.

The author is the deputy director and professor of the Institute of Culture and Art Planning and Promotion of Renmin University of China

And the president of the Foundation for Chinese Contemporary Art in the U.S.A.
