The batik grandmothers told us in not-so-standard Mandarin that batik has a history of more than 2,000 years in Guizhou, and the legend says that a girl named Wa Shuang was determined to use cloth to make a big umbrella to hold up the sky that often collapsed, and she put the cloth under the pear tree to dry, and the pear blossoms fell on the cloth and attracted bees, which stuck beeswax on the cloth when they were collecting honey and left behind the outlines of the pear blossoms, and the sap of indigo grass put the cloth on the ground and made it into the cloth. The sap of indigo grass dyed the cloth blue. Washuang was so happy to see this that he sewed an umbrella out of the cloth.
