4. Yang Shanzhou

Yang Shanzhou (January 1927 - October 10, 2010), male, Han nationality, member of the Communist Party of China, Yao, Shidian County, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province A native of Guanzhen, he started working in May 1951 and joined the party in November 1952. He once served as Secretary of the Baoshan Prefectural Committee of Yunnan Province.

After Yang Shanzhou retired, he won many honors such as "Top Ten National Greening Models", "National Greening Medal", "National Promising Advanced Individual", and was known as the "Living Kong Fansen".

Although Yang Shanzhou is the main founder of the Daliangshan Forest Farm, he never receives remuneration from the forest farm. Zi Hongxue, director of the forest farm, had talked with Yang Shanzhou many times.

Zi Hongxue said: "Old secretary, our forest farm can't afford the extra money, but the forest farm can still subsidize you 500 yuan a month." But Yang Shanzhou pushed Zi Hongxue back with one sentence: " I came to the mountain to plant trees, what do I need so much money for?”

After learning about Yang Shanzhou’s situation, the Baoshan Regional Economic Cooperation Office said to him: “Old secretary, you can be our consultant. We will give you 1,000 yuan a month.” Yang Shanzhou declined. He said: "I am a consultant to the forest farm and I don't have time to be your consultant."

His wife took the forest farm’s jeep four times, for which he paid 370 yuan for gas. He said: "After setting up the forest farm, the leaders considered that it was inconvenient for me to go out for work because I was old, so they specially equipped me with a car.

But the car is for office use, not for picking up family members and children. Although I am not here I have lost my position, but I still have to stick to my principles. Also, I have a car as a leader. What about those who can’t afford a car or a motorcycle?

Thinking about this, I think A leader is already 'special', and it's inappropriate to want to take advantage of others." After the Daliangshan Forest Farm was listed, Yang Shanzhou was not the director, but he was worried.

Normally, like the forest farm workers, he gets up early and works hard at night, digging ponds and planting trees in the mountains. He eats from the same pot and lives in the same linoleum shack. Some comrades can't stand it, saying that he is old and should be given some special care or a small treatment, but he firmly refuses.

I insist on eating, living and working with everyone. In order to keep out the cold, Daliang Mountain burns fire pits all year round. At night, everyone gathers around the fire pit where Yang Shanzhou lives to discuss work. Yang Shanzhou said happily, "Afforestation during the day and warming up by fire at night are also a good way of life!"

5. Nie Er

Nie Er (February 1912 14 - July 17, 1935), a native of Yuxi, Yunnan, born in Kunming, formerly known as Nie Shouxin, with the courtesy name Ziyi (also known as Ziyi), a Chinese musician and the author of the national anthem "March of the Volunteers" of the People's Republic of China. The composer used pen names such as Black Angel, Noisy Sen, Huan Yu, and Wang Daping.

In the mid-1930s, after the Japanese invaded Northeast China, they extended their iron hooves to North China. However, the reactionary and decadent forces in the country were still indulged in extravagance. The society is filled with dispirited and erotic songs such as "Peach Blossom River", "Drizzle" and "Sister I Love You".

Tian Han, a Communist Party member and writer, approached Nie Er and believed that "singing such a melodious tone will make people become slaves to the country's subjugation if this continues." The two agreed to write a song to overcome "Peach Blossom River is a nest of beauties".

The two studied "The Internationale", "La Marseillaise" and "Gondolier" and thought they were very powerful and could be used as a reference. In early 1935, Tian Han adapted the movie "Children of the Storm" and wrote a theme song - "March of the Volunteers".

Finding that the Kuomintang agents were chasing him, he hastily wrote the lyrics on a small cigarette wrapper and was taken to jail. Xia Yan got the script left by Tian Han and found the cigarette liner with the lyrics written on it.

Soon after, Nie Er came to see Xia Yan. After hearing about this, he took the initiative and said: "Leave the composition to me and I will do it!" Based on the idea proposed together with Tian Han, Nie Er was full of anger and just I composed the first draft in two days, and then I went to Japan to avoid being hunted.

There, on the one hand, he was warmly received by friendly people, and on the other hand, he also saw the militarists clamoring for "expanding interests in China" and sharpening their knives. This inspired Nie Er to create more inspiration, and he quickly sent the final version of the song back to China, with its melody even more high-spirited and majestic.
