Everyone welcomes the arrival of the God of Fortune
The image of the God of Fortune and related cultural works began to appear in Hong Kong society in the early 1970's, and at that time, the general public attached importance to the Lunar New Year, so the God of Fortune was created in the background of this era. The God of Fortune" was created against this background. Composed by Hong Kong singer Sam Hui, with lyrics by Sam Hui and Peter Lai, "The God of Fortune" was first performed by Sam Hui in 1978, and was included in the album of the same name. The song has lyrics first and then a tune, a musical composition technique known as "asking for the words and taking the accent", which was widely used in Cantonese music from the 1970s onwards.
The song "The God of Fortune" has elements of Western music, not a stylized song. The lyrics focus on the descent of the God of Fortune and refer to the blessings of people looking forward to a New Year that is as auspicious as they want it to be. In addition, the lyrics also reflect people's traditional desire to get rich, the love of wealth that is popular in Hong Kong society, and show the phenomenon of people living in poverty and fantasizing about being able to get rich.
At that time, Hong Kong's music industry was already popular for composing Lunar New Year songs, but these songs often only repeated the phrase "congratulations"; Peter Lai thought that such Lunar New Year songs did not have any connotation, and therefore the lyrics of "The God of Fortune" were innovative by using something other than "congratulations" as the theme. Therefore, the lyrics of "The God of Fortune" are based on something other than "congratulations", thus making it innovative. The song has lyrics that urge people not to be superstitious and not to do wrong, which Peter Lai believes can bring ****ing and positive energy.
