22-year-old Maria (Julie Andrews) is a nun raised in a Salzburg convent. However, her vivacious and nature-loving personality always gets her into trouble at the convent. Mother Abbess (Peggy Wood) of the convent feels that her lively personality is not suitable for nun life.

So, when she receives a letter from Colonel Von? Colonel Trapp's (Christopher Plummer) home seeking a caretaker, she decides to let Maria go, and in doing so, allows her to explore her true purpose in life.

Maria arrives at Von Trapp's home and discovers that he is the son of the Colonel. Trapp's home and discovers that he is a widower with seven children. A long life in the Navy and grief over his late wife have caused him to treat his children as strictly as he would discipline a soldier. Soon Maria realizes the reason why the caretakers used to leave; it turns out that the children were not loved by their father and always played tricks on the caretakers to get their father's attention.

The colonel asked Maria to be as strict as he was, but instead of listening, Maria used her natural gentleness and kindness to win the children's friendship. While the colonel was away, she made play costumes for each child out of curtains, led them on trips to the market, picnicked in the beautiful Alps, and taught them to sing.

The children's old constraints and melancholy were gradually replaced by music and laughter. Soon the Colonel returns home, bringing with him Uncle Max (Richard Hedin), whom the children love, and his girlfriend, the Baroness (Eleanor Parker), whom the children don't like so much.

The Colonel is very upset by Maria's actions, but he is touched when he hears the children singing for the Baroness, as Maria has brought back the music that has been absent from the house since the death of his wife.

Maria also prepares a puppet show with the children, and the colonel is captivated by Maria's infectious enthusiasm and sings "Snowdrops" to them. Max persuades the Colonel to let his family's children out to the festival, but the Colonel refuses.

A few days later, the colonel and the baroness have a big ball together, and the children have singing performances at the ball. At the ball, Maria demonstrates the Austrian folk dance "Laendler" to the children. To her surprise, the Colonel comes up to Maria and dances with her, and at the end of the dance they look at each other and Maria's heart goes out to the Colonel.

The Baroness sees all this, and that night she talks Maria into going back to the convent. Maria was afraid that her feelings for the colonel would be more and more limited, so she quietly left.
