The large-scale music and dance epic "The East is Red" was created and performed in 1964.

The choreography of "The East is Red" was carried out under the initiative of Zhou Enlai. The choreography group was headed by Chen Yading and Zhou Weiqi, who were both renowned artists and literary leaders. The choreography group alone included 29 people headed by Cha Lie. Rehearsals took several months, and the premiere and subsequent performances were held at the Great Hall of the People. This work presents the theme with rigorous structure, grandeur, exquisite design and high skill. In addition to a large number of new compositions, many of the best songs from various historical periods and excellent dances since the founding of the People's Republic of China have been used reasonably according to the development of the theme to be interspersed with the show, when the song is a song, when the dance is a dance, almost all of the famous contemporary singers, dancers and musicians participated in the performance, the whole team of more than 3,000 people (including some of the cultural and artistic organizations outside Beijing).

On October 2, 1964, the large-scale music and dance epic "The East is Red" premiered at the Great Hall of the People. Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Dong Biwu, Peng Zhen, He Long and other leaders of the Party and the country attended and watched the performance. In 1965, "The East is Red" was made into an art movie. Until today, more than 30 years later, every time "The East is Red" is re-screened, it is warmly welcomed by the masses. Mao Zedong was personally present at the Great Hall of the People to watch the performance, and on October 16, 1964, he received all the staff who participated in the creation and performance.
