What do you miss about a place?

From Memory of Jiangnan to Dreaming of Jiangnan

People's voices are heard on the bridge by the stagecoach. The name was changed to "Dreaming River". From memory to dream, Jiangnan is close or far away?

The Jiangnan recalled in Lotte's words is the landscape of the earth, while the Jiangnan in Huangfu Song's words is a beautiful and vague dream. Chen Tingzhuo "Bai Yu Zhai words" commented: "Huangfu Ziqi words, magnificent less than Feiqing (Wen Tingjun), but the wording of the leisure and elegance, are still the remains of ancient poetry. Flowers are not flowers, fog is not fog

(Tang) Bai Juyi.

Flower is not a flower, fog is not a mist.

It comes in the middle of the night and goes out in the morning.

It's like a dream in the springtime.

It's like a cloud in the fall.

Taiwan romance writer Qiong Yao once said that she had read the words for decades without understanding them, and after reading many explanations, she still didn't understand them, but then they were made into a TV series. I haven't watched TV for years, so I don't know if she got it in the end or not.

If you use logical thinking to understand, the first sentence will be stuck, what do you mean by "flowers are not flowers"? The same goes for "the fog is not fog". The next sentence says, "They come at midnight and leave at dawn." Is this talking about flowers and fog? They may come in the middle of the night, but they don't necessarily go in the morning. Logical thinking obviously does not work.

If we ask Lotte to come out and ask him what he means, I'm sure he won't be able to tell us. People who have read the Diamond Sutra should think of "all appearances are illusory", or the "Heart Sutra" in the "color is empty", perhaps this is the meaning of the "flower is not a flower". The Buddha flicked the flower, and Ka Yip smiled, and passed on the law without saying a word. When you look at the flower is not a flower, is not a flower, just pure awareness, you are really living in the moment.

We mortals look at anything, we are accustomed to using beliefs to frame, such as seeing a flower, immediately think of what kind of flower it is, good-looking, and then compared to other flowers, and even think of what "flower language", and so on. Such incessant thoughts separate the flower from the whole and turn it into your own illusion. Whatever the flower, including the word "flower" itself, is not the essence of the flower, just like any other thing, our naming and believing in it is just for the convenience of the world to go on as usual, and has nothing to do with the reality of that thing.

I am tempted to think that Lotte is hinting at a love affair in the poem, beautiful, mysterious, hazy, unnamable, and evanescent. "Come at midnight, go at dawn" could be a date, could be a dream. The last two lines of the metaphor is very good to understand, the spring dream is a metaphor for its coming fragrant and short-lived, and the autumn cloud is a metaphor for its going pale and trackless.

This interpretation, I do not know whether Lotte think so?

I wonder if Lotte would be satisfied with this interpretation? He might laugh at me for being a strong interpreter, and I would prefer to let this poem remain uninterpreted and mysterious.
