Background

A movie about children

Zhang Yimou said: "'Not One Less' is a movie that is very plain, traditional, commonplace and even clichéd from its content to its form, which happens to be one of our purposes: to create a truth and power in the commonplace. We who make movies, with the demands of today's movie market, of course we want to make them look good. So another of our aims is: what does the movie tell people, what does it make them think about, care about, love, in addition to looking good ...... because I firmly believe that the audience's tastes are not as monolithic and superficial as we envisioned them to be."

The documentary style of "Not One Less" reigns over the aesthetics of the entire movie, with its non-professional actors, documentary filming techniques, and impoverished mountain village elementary school, which pursues a sense of authenticity. Whether or not this realism was achieved, it still infected many people to some extent. At the same time, because the movie is in line with the policy, the National Copyright Administration issued a copyright protection notice for the movie "Not One Less", which is the first time that China has officially protected the copyright of a domestic movie. But what happens to the characters in the city, an unfamiliar environment, was a major reason why the movie won the Golden Lion in Venice. Of course, the film was also criticized by many domestic critics because all the difficulties in the film were solved by the mercy of the TV station director.

Awards

The film won the Outstanding Feature Film Award and the Outstanding Director Award (Zhang Yimou) at the Chinese Film Huabiao Awards in 1999; the Best Director Award (Zhang Yimou) at the 19th Golden Rooster Awards for Chinese Films; the Best Feature Film Award at the 22nd Hundred Flowers Award for Popular Cinema; the Best Feature Film Award at the 6th Beijing University Film Festival; and the Golden Lion Award at the 56th Venice International Film Festival; Best International Film Award, LA Film Organization Selection, USA, 2000.

Documentary of the Zhejiang Premiere of "Not One Less"

April 20, 1998, director Zhang Yimou led the crew of "Not One Less" to Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. At the exit of the airport, the enthusiastic Hangzhou audience offered a bouquet of flowers to director Zhang Yimou, expressing the feelings of the Hangzhou audience.

The press conference organized by China Film Group Corporation, Zhejiang Provincial Film Corporation and Hangzhou Film Company was scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on the same day, but there was still some time to go before 2:00 p.m., and more than 60 journalists from more than 30 media outlets in the province and the city (including news organizations from Wenzhou, Shaoxing, Huzhou, Zhoushan and other places that had traveled a long way) had arrived at the venue as early as possible to wait for the appearance of key figures.

In order to make the press conference intense and orderly and in-depth, the event organizers did a lot of preparatory work in advance. First of all, the early organization of a special news session, requiring every reporter to participate in the press conference and request an interview must watch the film, the film has a perceptual understanding; secondly, the reporter is required to prepare a good outline of the interview in advance, for uniform screening, to avoid superficial and boring questions; again, the organizers of the press conference on the layout of the venue attaches great importance to. According to past experience, in the press conference TV camera journalists often due to site constraints swarming, affecting the entire conference. For this reason, in the layout of the venue, the organizers specifically for the camera reporter to make enough space, to ensure that the conference is carried out in an orderly manner.

At 2 p.m., Zhang Yimou and his creators appeared at the venue on time to accept interviews with reporters. In more than an hour's visit, in the face of the reporters' various questions, Zhang Yimou behaved in a very down-to-earth, patient and friendly manner, without any big director's frame, just as he himself said: we are here to do things. His words and deeds infected every journalist who came to the meeting, and the journalists present all said the same thing: what an honest man. This shows that director Zhang Yimou, like his films, has an excellent "reputation"!

At the two audience meetings held at the Little Hundred Flowers Cinema Hall and Xinhua Cinema, many viewers could not hold back their excitement and went up to the stage to talk directly with director Zhang Yimou. A university professor said: "The movie gave me a deep impression, so that I was y taught, I will love my profession more in the future, and treat my students more kindly ...." Xinhua Cinema conducted an audience survey immediately after the premiere, and the results showed that "Not One Less" is first and foremost a good-looking movie. 197 of the 540 audience members thought it was "very good-looking" and 284 thought it was "good-looking", and the two together accounted for 8 percent of the valid questionnaires. The two together accounted for 89 percent of the valid questionnaires, and 84 percent of them said they would recommend the movie to others.

In the morning of the 21st, as Zhang Yimou and his entourage were leaving Hangzhou, reports from the Hangzhou news media had already appeared in the press, with many articles expressing the media's great affection for director Zhang Yimou and his film No One is Too Small, and it could be said that Zhang Yimou's trip to Hangzhou had had the desired effect.

"One for All" premieres in Shanghai

After traveling through Beijing, Tianjin and Zhejiang, Zhang Yimou and his entourage came to Shanghai on April 21 to attend the premiere of the film held here, which was preceded by Zhang Yimou's open letter to Cannes Film Festival President Jacob, so Shanghai journalists, in addition to being very concerned about the film itself, also expressed their concern about Zhang Yimou's withdrawal from Cannes. The reason for Zhang Yimou's withdrawal from Cannes is of greater interest to journalists in Shanghai. Zhang Yimou said: I just did what I think is the right choice, I will continue to work hard to make movies, make good movies that Chinese audiences like, more important than participating in international film festivals, more important than getting awards. As for what kind of movie is a good movie, Zhang Yimou feels that among all his works, "Not One Less" belongs to a good movie. As to whether this rural theme of the film can be loved by the Shanghai audience, Zhang Yimou is very confident, he believes that a film can attract the audience mainly lies in the emotion, not in the theme of rural or urban.

The truth is, as Zhang Yimou said, when "Not One Less" premiered in the cinemas of Da Guangming, Huanyi, Studio City and Changbai, the audience showed great enthusiasm for the film, and Zhang Yimou and his companions were also warmly welcomed by the audience. Fans of Film Studio 101 wore homemade promotional plaques on their chests with the words "Care and Support National Films ---- No Film is Too Small" printed on them. At China Textile University, more than 1,000 movie tickets were quickly purchased, while two consecutive screenings at Fudan University still failed to satisfy the majority of students and teachers. Cinema City, HuanYi, JiaHua HaiXing and other theaters in charge of people think: this simple and true to win the film can win the market, some of the first round of theaters are ready to extend the period of screening.

At the time of the release of "Not One Less", students from poor families in Shanghai also received a piece of love from the people. Some of the students who have achieved excellent results in the face of adversity were invited by Huan Yi Cinema to watch the movie, and the city's charity foundation also awarded 40 outstanding students from poor families in key high schools with "Huaiyin" fund prizes at Huan Yi Cinema in Meilongzhen Square.

Zhang Yimou suggested that she donate the money to the "Candlelight Project".

Whenever the cast and crew left the theater, the audience either waved or shook hands to say goodbye, and many enthusiastically shouted: "Wei Minzhi, Zhang Huike, study hard and be useful in the future. At this time, people have less chest thumping at the sight of a big star, but much more valuable true feelings. Many viewers believe that the impact of the film has greatly exceeded the film itself, which plays a role in focusing on society and life, and triggered people to think y about the development of science and education.

It is safe to say that the success of the four meetings has paved the way for the release of the film in the Beijing film market, and the good word-of-mouth from the audience is also a sign of good prospects for the film market.
