Clouds and water

Clouds and water, these two objects are invisible and formless, always flowing and soft, the world's free things. Therefore, the temple jungle to "clouds and water monks" to get the elegant name of clouds traveling around the residence of the Taoist.

Zen mind, which is the state of mind that is quiet and tranquil, refers to the state of mind that is empty and peaceful.

The Zen mind of clouds and water refers to placing one's Zen distant mind between the drifting clouds and water. In his poem "Exploring Plums in Xixi River", Yangmei declared this state of mind explicitly.

The ancient swings are quiet and secluded, the bamboo forests are high, the water network is dense with waves and light;

I ask the fisherman about the plum in Xixi, the sparse forests are lightly smeared and the wine flag beckons;

The white egrets fly in the foothills of the reed swamps, and the people of the Cao Tang house cross the small bridge;

The crow's head leans on the willow bank, and the cloud-water Zen mind is far away from the earth and the sky.

Provenance

The Record of Pointing to the Moon is also known as the Record of Pointing to the Moon of the Water and Moon Lodge. The book was collected by Qu Ruji of the Ming Dynasty. Wanli twenty-third year (1595) completed, thirty years of serial publication. Collected in the Wanxuan Tibetan book 143.

The so-called "pointing to the moon" originated from an allusion to a conversation between the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng and Wu Zhi Zang Ni:

Wu Zhi Zang Ni said to Hui Neng: "How can you talk about explaining the classics when you can't even read the characters? "Hui Neng replied, "Truth has nothing to do with words. Truth is like the bright moon in the sky, and words are only fingers pointing to the moon; the fingers can point out where the moon is, but the fingers are not the moon. But the finger is not the moon." The Buddhist scriptures contained in words are only fingers pointing to the moon, and only the Buddha-nature is the location of the moon.

Zen Buddhism takes the realm of "there is nothing in the first place" as the highest level, and "all thoughts are empty" as the highest virtue. It advocates that no text should be written, no footnotes should be placed, and the only way to achieve this is to confirm the reality in person. It is believed that all words and teachings are only for the convenience of showing the opportunity, and are the path and method of becoming a Buddha, such as pointing to the moon with a finger, so that people can see the moon because of the finger. This is the main purpose of the title of the book. This book is a collection of the words and deeds of 650 members of the Zen lineage from the Seven Buddhas of the past to the Sung Dynasty of Dahui Zonggao. Volumes 1 to 3 contain the past seven Buddhas, the sages who have been transformed, and the Western ancestors (the twenty-eight ancestors of the Western Heaven); Volume 4 contains the Eastern ancestors, from Bodhidharma to the Sixth Patriarch Huineng; Volume 5 to Volume 30 contain the first to the sixteenth generations of Huineng; and Volume 31 and Volume 32 contain the discourses of Zen Master Dahui Zonggao of the Path Mountain.

In addition, the Qing dynasty Nie Xian (Leyun Jushi) wrote a book, the whole book 20 volumes. Kangxi nineteen years (1680) published. It was published in 1680. It is a biography of Zen monks compiled after the "Finger and Moon Record". It is also included in the 143rd volume of the Wanshou Zang. This book is a follow-up to the "Record of the Month of Guidance," which only covers the next sixteen generations of the Sixth Patriarch, and covers the next seventeen generations of the Sixth Patriarch from the second year of the Southern Song Dynasty (1164) until the thirty-eighth generation of the Eighteenth Year of the reign of the Kangxi Emperor in the Qing Dynasty (1679). In addition, before the twenty volumes, there is an article titled "Preface to the Volumes", which contains the biographies of the sixteenth masters that were omitted from the "Record of the Months of Guidance", as well as the preface of Jiang Xiang and Yu Huai, the preface of Lingyan Scholar and Ruyi Jushi, the origin of Haiyin Scholar, and the question of Sun Xiaozhe's book, the general regulations, and the Lunshu Kao, and other articles. After the twenty volumes, there is a collection of sixty-one Zen masters whose succession is not known.

In the book, there is an account of a man who asked a Zen master about Buddhism. The Zen master did not speak, but pointed upwards and then downwards. The man did not understand and asked the Zen master to clarify. The Zen master said, "The clouds are in the blue sky and the water is in the bottle."

The Zen Heart of Cloudy Water

Raise your eyebrows

The laurel blossoms float down Ruoxi, the moon shadow of the Zen room inhabits,

The cloudy water is pale and far away from Qiantang, and the tide of the sea is attacked by a line;

The clear wind is accompanied by the moon, and the Zen tea floats in the air;

The sound of the six waves is moving the ground,

My heart seems to be like the Bodhi.

Stroke a high mountain Ruoxi, who can analyze;

Sigh a section of flowing water Ruoxi, who knows my intention.

Cinnamon floating down Ruoxi, Zen room clear frost perched,

clouds and water pale three Taiwan far, the scene line people shadow clear;

Past as a smoke dream, tenderness is like water according to the,

cut off the red dust, the sound of the wooden fish, the night is often empty silence.

The six dynasties of the rivers and mountains of the powder, gold, iron and steel,

How many heroes fist heart into blood,

only in the doorway inscription.

This is the first time I've seen this.
