At present, in the United States, square dance is as popular as folk dance and social dance. Everyone can join different clubs according to different levels, and it has developed into a daily social activity for every club. Former President Reagan even signed a bill in 1984 to designate square dance as the national dance of the United States. Every year, each state takes turns to host the International Square Dance World Congress. Nearly10,000 square dance lovers from all over the world joined the dance that lasted for four days and three nights. Men and women dressed in bright square dance costumes are like a happy and lively carnival. Canada, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Australia also have large-scale celebrations every year.
After World War II, Japan accepted a large number of European and American cultures, so square dance took root and grew in Japan very early. In addition, the Japanese uncle came into contact with square dance when he was studying in the United States in his early years, and he had a special liking for it. Therefore, although the square dance is conducted in English, it is still widely loved by the Japanese people. Up to now, there are more than 340 square dance friendship groups in Japan, with a scale exceeding1.20,000 members.
At present, there are quite a few square dance lovers in Taipei, and square dance activities are held regularly almost every day.
