Abu Hamasaki (October 2, 1978-) is a Japanese female singer and nationally protected figure who belongs to the Japanese company Avex Inc. She was born in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, and attended Horikoshi High School in Tokyo during her middle school years (she dropped out halfway through). She is recognized as one of the most popular Japanese pop divas of recent years, and is also regarded as a "Heisei Katsushika" (Heisei songstress). Her influence is felt throughout Asia, especially in the East Asian region, but also in other parts of the world. Ayumi Hamasaki has a pivotal position in the Japanese music scene, not only as a singer, but also as a fashion representative of Japan's young generation, leading the fashion trends in Japan and even in Asia, and playing a pivotal role in Japan's ever-changing fashion trends.
Since her debut single "poker face" on April 8, 1998, Ayumi Hamasaki has written all of her own lyrics. Her lyrics are like a mirror, clearly presenting her thoughts and contradictions about life, work, and self without reservation. As one of the most famous Japanese singers in recent years, she has released 44 singles, 9 albums, 1 mini-album, 19 remix albums and 4 anthologies in her native Japan*** to date. The total number of copies sold exceeded 50 million. She became the fourth highest-selling artist in Japanese music history. She has set new sales records in her native Japan, and in 2006, with the release of her 40th single "Blue Bird", she became the highest-selling female artist in Japanese music history, with a total of more than 20 million copies sold. Her album sales have been even more impressive, with most of her nine albums released to date topping the annual album sales charts (the Japanese oricon charts).
